Now Accepting Visa/MC (sort of)

Post by b0b »

I've just opened a business account with PayPal, a free Internet service. People can now use PayPal to pay for products from the forum catalog.

Click the graphic above to access PayPal. Also, if you say you were referred by quasar@b0b.com when you sign up, the Forum will get a $5 referral fee. Image

From all reports, PayPal is a very secure, high quality service. Many people on eBay use it. It seems like a real good idea to me.

Unfortunately, the service is only available to US residents. They say that they will be adding international service this year. I sure hope so, because it's hard for European members to send US funds for Forum products.

Great idea b0b! I have been reading eBay ads a lot and notice how common this service is. I am however going to the P.O. tomorrow to get a money order to send you for my first order... that is, if i don't forget, AGAIN! Image

I signed up, but there was no place to indicate who referred me to the site. I sent them an email comment. Let me know if you do not receive the referal fee.

John, I think that the referral is automatic if you go through the link I've pasted into this message. I did get notification that you and two other Forum members have signed up for PayPal, and they have credited my account $5 for each of you. I can transfer that money directly into the Forum bank account so...

Great idea, b0b. I believe one of those three would be me. Supposedly I also get a $5 credit for signing up. Cool.
Now--I'm sure I will figure this out but....what is the procedure to order something from you? Do I email you $$ via the utility on the paypal page and write my order in the box? I assume so and I look forward to trying it out.
What a country!

I've had great luck with paypal, used it for buying and selling a bunch of steels and such on the net. there have been a few complaints about them holding money for an extra day or so when requested for payment but I've never had any problems, it sure makes online purchases easier. If you go to send bOb (or anyone) money, you need to know the email address and the last name on the account to send the money to. Paypal gives you an eamil form to give all the information you need to buy the items including your shipping address and any other info you want to add.

That should work, Jon. Write your order in the PayPal email box and I expect that I will receive the order and the money at the same time. Don't forget to include your name and shipping address!

What percentage do they take for their services. Is it comparable with Visa?

Personal accounts are free. Business accounts take 1.9%, which is comparable to most Visa/MC merchant accounts.

As I understand it, they make most of their money on the "float", the time between when you send the money and when I deposit it to the Forum's bank account. It's really a win/win situation for people who use it, as far as I can tell.

Just completed my transaction with b0b. Very slick and went without a hitch.

Nothing like new technology to get my consumer impulses rolling :-)

It's true. Howard sent his order and payment via a PayPal-generated email, and I'll be shipping it this afternoon. This is the first email order I've filled. It's exciting how fast the transaction can take place. Very cool!

Also, PayPal's Refer-a-Pal $5 credit is great! And their web site is one of the most coherent I've ever seen. I'm very happy about all this. I can't wait until they go international!

Also true that PayPal gave _me_ a $5 signing bonus....of which I squandered on Forum products.

Life is very good!

Gawd...How I love technology.

Cool! I just completed a deal and got confirmation from b0b that it was done right. Couldn't have been easier.
You use the Email Money tab and enter quasar@b0b.com in the recipient box----remember, it's -b- -zero- -b- b0b.
You put all your order info and shipping address in the message box. Simple. And since you don't have to write a check that means it's free, right?
Next month you just shrug when you don't remember the charge on your card and you pay it, like all those other forgotten charges you go ahead and pay.

---Bartender! Was I in here last night and did I spend $20 on whiskey?
---You sure were and you sure did, sir.
---Whew!! That's a relief. I thought I lost that $20!
[This message was edited by Jon Light on 22 June 2000 at 04:10 PM.]

The system seems to work real well. It should be available for people outside of the US by the end of the year.
