For anyone interested, I've just written a rhythm machine program to use as a practice aid. The program is basically a metronome that also plays several other basic rhythm patterns such as shuffle, waltz, cha-cha, and also regular straight time beats. My main goal was to make the program easy and straight forward to use. It certainly doesn't do nearly as much as a virtual drum machine program, but you can open it up and be playing along with it in a matter of seconds.

Anyway, it's free for everyone to try. Here's a screen shot:
