Hi Guys
The year 1986, I was guesting on Gerry Hogan's Newbury festival, with guitarist Gary Potter.
Very nervous and a few fluffs, so be gentle.

Dave, yes it's Gary. How do you know him ?.
Derrick. I think Graham and Gary know each other quite well.He's heavily into jazz and Django now. An incredible player.The hair is disappearing rapidly and the old joints are starting to click.It's all those old twin tens elongating the arms.

Barry, i don't know Gary personally, but became aware of him when i saw the documentary on Django and the young gypsies that he took part in. i remembered him talking about being influenced by Roy Nichols and country music, etc and i put 2 and 2 together. i've always liked his playing and, particularly, his fresh approach to Django's music. now if i'd actually read your first post i would've noticed that you mentioned his name and might not have asked such a dumb question !

Barry that's amazing picking from you both. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that the first convention Gerry ran,and Slim Pickins opened the show?? I had a stand displaying steels that I had engraved and you bought a Sho-Bud 12 string pick/up I was selling. I recall Nils Tuxen playing there too. Gerry persuaded me to do a spot which I did reluctantly after hearing your "Jazz" feel

but never the less I got my 'Bud up there and did a short spot. I opened up with "Girl from Ipanema" Dave Haywood was on guitar and was flapping about the chords in the middle 8

So glad you did that post for us to let all know the talent you have.Good on you mate.

It could have been, I can't quite remember. I know I certainly got a 12 string pickup from you and can remember your stall and Slim being there. I can remember I sold an original blue left handed telecaster to Nigel Dennis which I regretted.
I can remember being really nervous knowing the room was full of musicians.

That's excellent! I remember that it knocked me out back then! It still does ... and more so! I'm glad to know you're still picking. What a surprise I had when we met briefly at one of the motorway service areas last year! You were going back up to the wild northern wastelands

as we were heading back to the south coast for a gig. At least, we're still able to find a gig somewhere! I'm very thankful. I hope it won't be close to 30 years until we meet up again!

Please post up some more of your playing.

Great to hear from you. Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate them.
There are another two vids' to upload from the same show.
It's a peculiar thing when you watch yourself from so many years ago. Firstly you mourn the passing of youth and the years, and then after a few views you notice the errors, the nervousness, the style, the licks (some of which you have to revisit to decide how the hell you did them).You wish you'd smiled a bit more or even seemed happy doing what you were doing. There aren't many steel players who play great and emanate enjoyment and fun, Joe wright and our own Slim Pickens are two, it's a skill I haven't mastered. It's a heads down and go.
I must say a big thanks Gerry for your Efforts over the years for bringing top players we would never see, over to the UK, and for giving many local steel players a chance to showcase their skills. We do have some great players who would never otherwise be seen, who can hold their own on the world stage.
Maybe we'll meet on the M5 again, hopefully still working and dragging those pedal thingies we love so much on to another successful gig !

Can I echo Gerry's comments. That is superb playing from any perspective, and the 'Bud sounds wonderful.

We have some great players in the UK, and most are too modest in promoting themselves. You, Gerry, Pete Heywood, Sarah, BJ and many others are flying the flag for the Brits and show that we have world class players over here too.

I can't believe a week has gone by since I browsed this thread and I see Barry and Ken have posted in the meantime! I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your stuff on here Barry - and as for Ken ... if anyone deserves to be mentioned in the list on your post it is you yourself, Ken!

BTW: is there anything on YouTube from Ken? If not, it's long overdue.
