Hi Carl,

"I have heard him get it on a Maverick and also on a Legrande!!"

You really need to quit trying to copy other players and try to be yourself. I stand by my comment. Only Buddy Emmons can get the "emmons" sound and Yes, it is in HIS hands not yours. Respectfully...

I have tried to think over years of posting on this forum. And I cannot recall a single time I ever said I was trying to copy other players.

So now in addition to asking you the following question twice:

"Also, mind telling us when and where you saw Buddy Emmons play a Maverick?"

Would you also, be so kind (respectfully) to sight a single post where I ever said I was trying to copy someone else?

Since I easily qualify as the worst player there has ever been, and have said that on this forum, why in the pluperfect hallelujah would I ever think I could "copy" someone? Let alone even think I was a steel guitar player.

Respectfully,

carl

Hey, Henry, Carl asked you a legitimate question. You made a bold statement about BE playing a Maverick, and Carl, who knows as much if not more about BE than anyone, would like to know about this. He asked you in a civilized way, and you come back insulting him. Which means you insulted me. Carl is a friend of mine and one of the smartest guys YOU'LL ever talk to about steel guitar You weren't asked if you will "stand by your statement" and you weren't rebuked. You were simply asked where and when. I'd also like to know. Hopefully you will tell us next time you post, and not continue insulting us. .. Jeff

Hi Carl and Jeff,
No insult was intended. Many years ago in the mid seventies when I was a teenager I used to go to Jeff Newman's old pad in the Hermitage south of Nashville. Mr. Emmons was a frequent visitor there and played masterfully. Sometimes he just came to hang out but most times he brought a steel with him. I do remember him playing a maverick for a fews songs. It probably wasn't his.
Carl, I do not deny that you are an expert on Mr. Emmons. All I am doing is telling what I remember and stating my opinion that only Mr. Emmons has the emmons sound and I believe that it is in his hands. I trust that helps.

Hi Jeff,

Please take a deep breath and relax! Carl and you are both steel players and consequently automatically people I consider friends. Equally, I would expect you to consider me a friend on the same basis.

Like I said to Carl no insult nor disrespect was intended. There is a common temptation among us steelers, including me, and that is to try and buy someone elses tone. Masters like Mr. Emmons did not buy their tone but invested thosands and thousands of hours developing it. I was only exhorting us to develop our own tone and most certainly did not intend any offence or disrespect to any steel guitar players.

Carl,

I believe that the maverick in question belonged to a student of Jeff Newman's who was with us at Jeff's on a weeklong intensive session with Jeff as our teacher. I remember it to be an older maple maverick model, the kind that used to be made before they started covering mavericks with burl paper.

You will notice that I rarely contribute much to the forum, despite having been a member for some time. I prefer to spend as much time as possible behind my axe. I trust that this information will help you fill in some of the gaps.

Various masters would drop by including Mr. Emmons and also Lloyd Green. Both these legends would drop by unannounced at different times and play different guitars sometimes those that belonged to the students.

Its interesting how people do hear the same thing differently. I think Tommy's tone on the MSA is outstanding. I agree that to some it may lean towards the thinner sound, but to me its a vintage tone that he is getting and thats the same tone I try to get out of my Sho-Buds. For ME thats great tone. For others its not. I personally don't like guitars without alot of edge. I'm liking the MSA the more that I see and hear
Tommy play it. Fred I agree, but I like the forum too much.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 16 January 2003 at 09:07 PM.]

My 1980's puter want let me play anything from the Opry archives. Image Just a thought though. It probably sounds a lot more watered down there than it did when it left the amp.
