On Ricky Skaggs' version of the song, it was....Buddy Emmons.

Mickey Gilley did what I would consider a great version of the song, but danged if I can remember whether there was steel on it. I think it's been about 20 years since I've heard it.

Leon Russell had a great (albeit somewhat quirky in true Leon fashion

) version on one of the Hank Wilson's Back albums. Pretty sure Weldon Myrick was on that cut.

My favorite version has Buddy Emmons playing.It's on a Duane Eddie LP.It was done around 1963.Blows all the above mentioned away.Just my opinion of course.----------bb

If the singer is George Jones and the song is from the Mercury Heartaches and Tears album, 1964 or possibly from the Musicor album Hits By George, 1967, the player is most likely Sonny Curtis.

I thought Jimmy Day played on Jones's original, around 62. It might have been later though and Sonny on it.

The original Jones cut was released in'60...peaked at#2 on the charts 11/7/60...listen to it...I could be wrong,but it sounds like Buddy to me!

Still sounds like Jimmy Day to me. No disrespect to the Big E, but of course Buddy could have been thinking like Jimmy that day. I've heard them both play each others licks. How bout it Steven. By the way what are you doing now? Who you pickin' with?

Terry,I always thought it was Jimmy too,but some of the licks(harmonics,open strings)and the tone in general make me think it's Buddy...wish he'd show up and tell us!I've just been doing sessions mostly-I did a couple of things during Country Radio Seminar with Dusty Drake(Warner Bros.)and played at the Broken Spoke the other week...it liked to have killed me!That's past my bedtime anymore!Take care-Steve

I'm sure it was Jimmy D. I have an old cassette of one of his old albums, think it was named "Golden Steel Guitar Hits" where he played some of his signature stuff from his big-time session days. Window Up Above, Pick Me Up on Your Way Down, old Ray Price stuff, and Lonely Street were some of the other things on that album. Have long since lost the original label from the cassette, but I know it is JD.

I've got the George Jones version. But I dont think it's the original. Whatever the version, it's some beautiful steel work!!

Colin, Skaggs' Country Boy album has Bruce Bouton, Lloyd Green and Buddy Emmons appearing on the album and the steel on Window Up Above was credited to Buddy, according to the liner notes.
