Yep, it was me, but what are you doing reading a 34 year old magazine? This goes to show who doesn't read "Steel guitar Player Magizine", or does it show how old I am? But then this was 34 years ago that I said it. As you will also see, my playing is quite different than most. I didn't exactly follow the crowd. I wish I could have made this dream a little more pronounced in my jazz playing but there was really no demand for this type of thing in the Nashville scene, they just wanted copy cat clones in the studio here. After I made this statement in "Guitar Player Magazine", I did go on to a pretty succesful studio career, this was one thing that kept me from being a "new style crusader" that I wish could have been more of.
Anyway, yes, it was me that is the topic of this post, but, now that I think back on this statement, I wonder what would have happend had I been less commercial minded ($$) and stayed closer to my crusader dream? I may have ended up much better off, but then, I doubt it. Happier? Naw, who knows.

The quote, by the way, is from the Dec. 1969 issue of Guitar Player magazine...the same one where Buddy tabbed out his Night Life intro. In the same article, Bobbe goes on to say...

People are stuck on the traditional whining steel guitar. If all the big boys in Nashville would move out, and there was a place for Chalker and the rest of the C6th players, the steel would undergo a big change.

Seems like, in 34 years, things really haven't changed very much.

Bobbe...you shouldn't have any regrets! The same controversies that were germane 30 years ago are still going on today. Nobody knows where the steel guitar is going, it's kinda got a "life of it's own". No one player can direct the movement, and it will go where it wants, or where the audience, in general, wants it to go.

You've certainly made your mark on the instrument, and continue to do so today. The same author of the article said...

Bobbe Seymour, (is) one of the most exiting steel guitarists to arrive in Nashville.

And, listening to both your "Priceless" CD, your "2 Knee-Lever" video, and also having you participate here on the Forum, I am inclined to agree.

Mr. Boggs I couldn't agree with you more and I'm a big pure country fan. I've played with as many rock and blues bands on steel as country. When the steel players I knew would come in they'd kind of give me that "Why don't you play something country" thing. One guy would sit in and get up and walk out if the band strayed away from country at all. You try to branch out a little and catch hell from your peers for doing it. I like most music if it's done tastefully. My guess for Joeys quote is Buddy Rich!
