Mike (Miguel) Smith is (IMHO) one of todays
finest steel players. He proved that years ago, with the release of his album entitled,"Dreams of India". Vibratorecords.com has re-released this fine album. That is great news,in itself,but wait, there's more!! Mike has added two new cuts to the album. Ho-Hum,you say! Aue'
Contrere! Both cuts are fine,but I honestly believe that one of the new cuts,entitled,"Creek Walk",is worth the price of the CD,by itself. Ever since I became impressed by contemporary Irish tunes & jigs through Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance", I have said, "Someone needs to adapt that style to Pedal Steel." I never got around to it and now I never will because Mike has not only done it, he has set a whole new standard for it, which I don't think I could ever equal or surpass!!!.
Mike, I love it! Oh,err,umm,...but please don't wear that silly Turban when you play it!?*#!! O.K.?--

I like the 'Jive Turkey' T-shirt.

Mike has been one of my very favorite musicians (whatever instrument) for many years -- he taught me ALL THREE of my licks.

Re:LARRY, even if you have the original "Dreams of India",this CD is still worth buying. It has great "CD quality" sound,which gives new life to the old stuff;then the new tunes are like iceing on the cake!
The original was cut or released in 1977,and I was one of the first to get a copy,back then. I have a confession;I have to admit I was so impressed with Mike's effective use of an envelope filter on the original album,that I just had to use one on "Harlem Nocturne" when Johnny & I did our album in 1978-79. I quickly learned that there was an art to using the filter,like everything else in Mike's artistry. Like the Big "E",Mike is a virtual fountain of originality & finesse.

That was the coolest little box. As I recall it was an MXR Clone Theory. Not exactly the usual envelope follower sound. As a keyboard player, Mike had/has a slightly different approach -- plus a LOT of TALENT and MUSICALITY.
