So I'm watchin' the ***** ******* on TV and there's this 'guest' playing acoustic and also a guy on steel. The guest is someone whose name is unfamiliar to me. Same w/the steeler.
StinK StinK StinK!!!
There, that's my review.
The song sTINked, the singing sTINked, the steeler seemed like he knew next to nothing about playing his instrument (which sTINked), the tone was screechy (which sTINked), and so forth and so on...
I mean it was like the anti-Randolph; gonna ruin more youngsters on steel than, well, whatever!
If ALL you can play are major and minor triads (and that with pusillanimous ineptitude), stay the hell off the stage; ESPECIALLY nationwide broadcasts!!!
I'm sorry if this seems a bit harsh but PEOPLE; I'm APPALLED and AGOG!
[This message was re-edited by Marty Pollard to appease Jody, even though SUCK is not such a bad word as all that anymore (as it may have been when Jody was young a LONG time ago), on 28 September 2002 at 11:45 PM.]

[This message was edited by Marty Pollard on 28 September 2002 at 09:41 PM.]

If it was the Craig Kilbourn "Late Late Show" last night, it was Frank Black, formerly of the Pixies w/ Dave Philips on steel. Yes the tone was not great, but his playing was fine. As for the song, I had not heard it before, and wasnt really impressed w/ it. But Frank Black needs to be heard w/ a loud band behind him while he is screaming. W/out his work w/ the Pixies, Nirvana and all of their spawn would have never been. They were a truly awesome band that burned out at the height of their success.
Marty, remember when bands play on talk shows, they usually dont get a good sound check, and it is also someone running the board that is not familiar w/ their music. To me, it sounded like they ran his axe straight into the board, which would explain the weak tone.

If it's the same show I'm thinkin' about, there's never been any music on there that's impressed me. For Pete's sake, look at the audience he's got! A thirty year-old would be a "senior citizen" in that mob. When you get a show geared for a bunch of young kids, I never expect too much, musically. It's usually just screaming, banging drums, and distorted guitars. Too bad I turned it off before the singer came on last night, I might be of more help.
Generally, I've noticed that the mixes are terrible on the Letterman show, too...simply terrible! It's like the guest band starts off bad, and during the 3-4 minutes of their song, the audio guy is asleep...nothing changes!!! Leno's crew seems much better at sound, for some reason.

Check your "profile" I have checked mine,, I have posted 1584 since Jan 2 2001..If I gave
1584 peanuts to the monkeys in the Zoo,,I
would have accompolished more than being on here.
Those people you critisize are being paid for
what they are doing,,what are you doing?? sitting behind a keyboard? Its easy to be a
self appointed expert from where you sit,,,,
get out in the real world and try to make a living as a pro musician,,maybe you will change your tune.
Herby Wallace said it best in his "Buy & Sell
post,,he too,,as many others have found this
Forum to be a haven of hate, and animosity and
know it all's, what is supposed to be a place
of friendship has turned into a HORROR for
many,,Its a shame people such as Jerry Byrd
Speedy West,,Bill Stafford, Tommy White and others with class have to stay away from things like this,,they have common sense that
is not the rule here,,Its "submit reply" then
think of what they posted later,,many of you
have offended people,,,as for me,? I take it from where it comes. I can take it or leave it,,so all things considered,,I choose to leave it,,,,,get a bag of "Peanuts" and dont
throw the shells on the floor.
Im suprised at you people,,brave men behind a
computer,,,,why dont you practice more and maybe you too can get on TV and make as ass
of yourself and get paid for it,,here you make asse's of yourself without being paid.
Im laughing as I post this,,because its true
maybe no one has ever told you how funny you are..The expression "sucks" belongs on the street not on a Forum such as this,,,if you have no respect for yourselves,,have some for
others.
Man,,,you guys should have been around when
people were people...you dont have to be a
"pro player" to be on this Forum,,,but it would help if you behaved like a "pro human"
being.. It often
amazes me how bOb Lee puts up with things like this...you make a good thing bad,,check your tunings and practice,it may help ease
the frustrations and temptations to critisize
others,,,,,any of you working a music gig for a living???
try it sometime. I'll throw the peanuts back.
you would be suprised how many know it all's couldnt get
a job playing for a dollar.
Thats the Rest Of The Story,,,Paul Harvey
GOOD DAY. Oh damm,,,,why did I waste my time
on this? I could have been practicing and eating peanuts,,I'll never learn. Say what you wish about me,,I wont be "lurking" as they say..Its not my thing..Its back to the pro's I admire and listen to great playing & not "gossip" and wasted energy,,,get a gig if
you can,,,less time on here and "make someone
happy".

Geeee-UZ Jody!?!
I said I knew I was being harsh but I spoke the truth as I saw it (heard it). I've edited the SUCKS just for you.
DUDE! If the player in question is, like, your son or suthin' then I'm really sorry I dissed him so bad but he had it comin'. Instead of telling ME to go practice, tell HIM!
I don't know why I have to do this all the time but: yes, I've played full-time for a living (at times); yes, I've gotten to do some session work that turned out well; yes, I've been on the road and it's fun but also sTINks in a way; OK???
Look Matt, this was a high profile opportunity for this guy to impress a large audience and he failed miserably. It wasn't just the mix; he was chokin' BAD. Would I choke bad in the same situation? I hope not but I suppose it's possible. Would I be devastated by a review like the one I rendered? Probably so...
Hmmm...
nevermind
How 'bout this weather, eh?

Agreed. Hissing, door slamming, and stamping of feet intended to suppress an opinion on a steel guitar issue should probably be confined to a proposed Forum section called Grandstanding. It often amazes me how bOb Lee puts up with things like this...
Hey, what day is this? Saturday? I thought Tuesdays and Thursdays were your days to storm from the Forum in a huff.

Lee, don't you remember your 1950s low budget horror flicks? Don't you watch Elvira? What's a gog?
Gog was a black and white monster from outer space. He was made out of cardboard and, if memory serves correct, defeated by a bunch of teenagers (portrayed by 30 year old actors) who only listend to Pat Boone and Frankie Avalon (Elvis was too obscene) and whose parents refused to believe that the Earth was being invaded.
He did NOT play the steel guitar.

Well,,,,I didn't catch the show, but if I see something I don't enjoy, I switch channels, as for the forum, I read in it several times a day and enjoy most of the things I read. Lots of good stuff on here for me, and some of the posts,,,,,I switch channels, I love the forum,, the people that post here, and glad to be a very small part of it. I don't consider it a waist of time.
My thanks to all that post,,,,,

Hey man a forum is just like any group of people that get together. There are going to arguments and differences of opinion. AND wouldnt it be boring as hell if there were'nt? To be honest I kinda like a good scrap anyhow and when my friend Bobbe gets all wound up its really a hoot to read. Folks are just different and thats cool. Shoot I even enjoy Marty's rants most of the time so to me its all pretty dadgum good. I dont think theres another place in the entire world where you can do a search and learn as much about the steel guitar as you can here. So let freedom ring and enjoy!

Marty--Reading your post makes me think, why do I try to play the steel for.I've been at it for over 45 years and if you where to hear me,you would say that guy on TV played better than me.I've never player the big show, never been on the road ,or TV.I don't know if I could please YOU or others on this forum, if you where to hear me play. But what keeps me going are nights like last night at the Eagles club where the people out having fun enjoyed my playing. Joe

I agree with Rick Garrett, aren't there some who said they are leaving and still here? makes you think that them saying they're leaving is meant to be a punishment to those who voice their opinions freely, as we will all suffer because of their absence, to much good and valuable stuff here for most of us to ever leave
