)Not a THING wrong being SLOW......I know ALOT of SWIFT pickers that think that if they can CRAM
40 LICKS in ONE bar, they think they are as fast as Buddy, Tommy, Terry, Paul, and Dr. Bobby, (Seymore, For some of you NEW members)
and MANY other TOP pickers in the world that I do not have time OR SPACE here to name. BUT.......ARE THEY SMOOTH? DO THEY HAVE THE TONE?
NOT!!!!!
I would rather be SLOW, but SMOOTH, and have TONE, and play from the HEART and SOUL.
NOT EASY TO DO BOTH........that is why I am The SLOWEST one on this thread as of yet.
Keep picking a winner, Guys

I've told this story before, but I believe it bears repeating here.
In 1998, I came downstairs to the hall at the ISGC. It was in the morning and there was not but a handful of people in the hall.
As I wandered inside, I heard the most beautiful steel playing one could ever want to hear. I had no idea where it was coming from.
Suddenly I looked toward the Zum booth and saw a crowd of men listening to the person playing. I could not tell who it was.
When I finally got close enough to see, (and much to my delight), it was Bruce Zumsteg playing one of his new guitars in the booth. I was in awe.
I had known Bruce for a number of years, but this was this first time I ever heard him play. And was he playing. His tone and expression was music from heaven. Just beautiful.
Later, I told him of my experience and lauded him for what he was playing. He told me,
"I found out early that I could not play fast. So, I concentrated on playing the slow stuff well".
Boy, did he ever succeed in that goal. Just loved what he was playing. Truly a rewarding experience for me.
God bless Bruce and ALL of you,

My metronome is a calendar.
It takes me half an hour to play the Minute Waltz,
two hours to watch 60 Minutes.
Yesterday, May 4th, I watched the March 2nd Grand Old Opry.
I learn New Country songs when they're released,
but by the time I play them they're Classic Country.
Gotta go... Supper's ready!"

Bruce Zumsteg, the steel player! Yes! Haven't ever heard him on a job or show, but to see him just sit down and play a few bars of something is a wonderful experience. Then you have to see how modest he is afterword, quite the guy. Slowest player? Must be him, slow and beautiful, great tone and execution!

I'm pretty slow too...started writing a song for Barbara Mandrell over 25 years ago, and never finished it! 'Course, she gave up singing anyway, so I guess it don't matter now.
(It would have been the prequel to "Sleepin' Single In A Double-Bed".)
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 05 May 2002 at 07:36 PM.]
