Turn Off Animations?

Post by b0b »

Does any browser have a setting to turn off animated images? They're really distracting, especially on the news sites.

I don't think I've ever seen animations on the internet. Or at least I've never noticed them if they were there.

Assuming you're using OS X --

Safari: Saft or Pith Helmet.

Firefox, Safari, or Opera: Privoxy.

b0b,
In Internet Explorer, you can turn off the animation. It will still show an image, but no animation.

In IE, click tools, internet options, advanced, scroll down to multimedia and make sure to remove the check in the box that allows animations in webpages.

Thanks for the tip about IE, Lem.

I installed Pith Helmet on my Mac. It has an option to play animations once, instead of letting them cycle ad nauseum. That's cool! Now the little guys in Jon's post (above) only hit each other once.

Thanks, guys!

Wait a minute, Donna's got those smiley face cheer leaders and their pom poms going. I don't think its a good idea to mess with Mama Donna.

Bob,

By itself, Pith Helmet doesn't really speed up or slow down your computer. But on a slower connection you may find the end result is that a page will display faster because your browser isn't downloading all the ad graphics.

Also, I forgot to mention two things for non-Safari users, as well as PC users who want the same functionality. Opera on both Mac and PC has a "Disable GIF animation" setting that requires no add-on. The only downside is that animations are either on or off; there is no repeat setting like b0b mentioned for Pith Helmet.

Finally, the Adblock Firefox extension for both Mac and PC can block Flash and GIF animations. For example, select Tools >Options>Overlay Flash (for left-click). This replaces each Flash element on the page with a clickable layer that creates an Adblock filter.

I just discovered that hitting the Esc key in Firefox stops animation GIFs!

It turns out that a lot of the offending animations are Flash objects. I found a plugin called "FlashBlock" for FireFox that disables them quite nicely: http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

It puts a "Play" icon in the space, so that you can play the item if you want to.

Thanks a ton for this hint! Flash blocker is a real sanity saver.
Those endlessly flashing ads ads actually make people like me avoid some pages, and that's probably not what the advertisers intended.

I believe Firefox Flashblock is loaded with the Win32:Swissor virus. Check my "20 Hits" post.

If you are all referring to Flashblock 1.5.1, available either from addons.mozilla.org or from the author's homepage, I have downloaded both versions, opened them in Winzip and extracted all files to a folder, then ran a complete virus scan with AVG using today's updated definitions. No viruses were found. I also read all comments on Mozilla.org, from people who have downloaded and installed Flashblock 1.5.1 and nobody has reported any viruses.
