Sound like the "windows" key on your keyboard is stuck down - it's the key with the flying window icon.

I checked the windows key and it may have been stuck. I released it and could type'e' and 'u' etc but could not type 's'.
I've put another keyboard on and seems to be working ok.

Pat;
Shall we consider this topic resolved by replacing your keyboard?

I've never used the "windows" key before so I was not familiar with its function. Holding down the windows key on the replacement keyboard is duplicating the problem I had...so it seems that a stuck key was the problem. thanks Lou. And thanks Wiz. Problem solved.
