Beware of Sony cameras, too!

I just found this item. Sony's logic is bizarre at best.<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Bill Bosler on 20 November 2005 at 03:32 PM.]</p></FONT><font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Bill Bosler on 20 November 2005 at 03:34 PM.]</p></FONT>

Thanks for the heads up. My wife is going to buy my daughter a digital camera for Xmas. You can be sure it won't be a Sony. She said, "What's wrong with those people, don't they have enough money?

She just bought the new Neil Diamond album, on the Sony label. She actually got a recall notice to return it for one that's not "infected"

That snide fellow in the link above saying it won't hurt sales is due for a big suprise. This household, as I suspect in many, will never buy a Sony product again.

This is clearly a joke. Satire.

Doesn't look that way to me. If it's satire it's poorly done.

<SMALL>"People know about the dangers of music and movie piracy, but not about the dangers of sharing personal photos. What happens if a person takes a picture of Mariah Carey's latest CD? Think of the children."</SMALL>
<SMALL>There was a 14-page license agreement that printed out first that I had to fill out and fax to Sony so they could send me an authorization code to print out the picture."</SMALL>
<SMALL>Wilkerson doesn't think the lack of photo sharing capabilities will hurt the sales of their digital cameras. "We've hidden the protection so the consumers won't notice it when they buy it, and our draconian return policy will prevent any returns. Problem solved."</SMALL>
<SMALL>Hackers have already cracked the Sony DRM system by buying another digital camera and using it to take pictures of their pictures once they are displayed on their computer screen. "It's a hassle," said one hacker who wished to remain anonymous, "but at least you haven't wasted the money you spent on the Sony camera."</SMALL>
Satire. Onion style.
Pretty good.

I tried and failed to find anything about the DSCP515 camera and whether it uses DRM software to inhibit owners' ability to distribute their personal images on the web, as alleged by the author of the article, Brian Briggs. But he's got his comments all over the web, that's for sure.

I don't think it's "satire", regardless. Sony has gone way over the top, apparently, on DRM and other infringements on individuals rights to do what they want with their own stuff, and keep their personal privacy in the process.

I recently purchased a Sony DVD/CD-RW drive for my computer. Wonder what that means for me.

That alone means you probably own a pretty good quality drive that will give you good service for a long time.

What's to feel less good about is that when recent Sony CDs are played on PCs, spyware is transferred to the PC at the OS level.
