viewing jpeg on website

A forum member informed me that he cannot view the jpeg images on my website ("friends pictures"), but can view them on other sites. Can anyone offer suggestions? All I knew to offer was to set the "advanced" internet options to "default", for starters. He did not tell me his operating system or browser......JD

John, have him delete his Temporary Internet Files. I don't know if that will fix it, but if the temporary internet files are loaded (a lot of files) there is a problem that's been with Internet Explorer for years where you can only save pictures as bmp, not jpg. Clearing (deleting) the temporary internet files fixes this problem (and even Microsoft has a Tech note on this).

Thanks Jack. It's worth a try. He indicated that he sees images on other websites. I just guessed that they would also be jpeg files. I'll keep you posted,if and when I learn anything new.

See if he has a router or firewall in place. My wireless router was overheating and causing some pictures not to show up.

Also, have him blow out the computer. Especially the processor. When they get that undercoating of dusty dirt, they sometimes don't work like they should.

Might help...

should a person delete those temporay internet files every now and then? and whats on those files? anything i would need? i have never emptied mine?

The temporary internet files are from sites visited. They can be safely deleted occasionally and won't cause you any problems. Those files have info from the sites you visisted and will load when you visist the site. If the temporary files are not there the site just loads new ones from the site. The extra time to reload new ones from sites is really not an issue.

I had a problem one day with slowdown on the internet (I'm on Cable) and the RoadRunner support had me delete the temporary internet files and that improved the resposne time, in my case.

Good point Ernie. I learned that he is running XP. I have suggested setting security to "default" and privacy to "medium". I am waiting for some more details on his system... like which Browser and if he installed any firewalls.

As a (sometimes) computer tech, a "dirty" (dusty) PC won't cause the problems John is referring to. It may cause the PC to overheat and with the new P4 Processors if they overheat they have an internal sensor that will slow down the Processor speed and if it really gets overheated there is thermal protection and it will shut itself off (something AMD processors won't do).

As far as a router overheating, that too would not be selective on what data is passes or not pass. All the router knwos is it's "data" of some type - it doesn't know and can't differentiate between pictures, chracters, etc. The only thing it can detect is something with an address control field and it will send it (or block it). As we are using Ethernet protocol, it is a "free form" protocol, not a "controlled" protocol like Token Ring.

Jack-Just what is the procedure to follow in order to Delete temporary Files? I have never done it.

On another subject, how do you put Windows XP in a SAFE mode.? the XP manual is a joke....al

Al, on top of the Internet Explorer page, click "tools","internet options". Under the "general" tab, you will see "temporary internet files". Click on "delete files". It will take you to the next step to confirm your choice to delete all temporary internet files.

For what it's worth: I was having problems with my computer. (IE didn't want to load anything.) I was trying everything, restarting after each change. Nothing worked. I was short on time and a friend asked if I had blown it out lately. I said I hadn't. So, I did. (It looked like a cork backing on the fan! Nope, dirt and dust!) After restarting it, I left for work, not doing anything else. (I left the computer on while I was gone to collect my mail.) When I came back, it was working fine. So, unless it fixed itself, (which it's never done before or since,) I assume it had something to do with it.

As for the router, it wouldn't let data thru from particular websites. I tried a lot of things and nothing worked. I called my provider and after trying a bunch of things they recommended, they asked if I had a router. I said I did. They had me diconnect it and plug directly into the computer. Voila! Pictures. I checked on some wireless router message boards and found that my router has heat issues. With it out, I could get the pictures. I put it back into the loop and couldn't. I unhooked it and let it set, unplugged, for a couple of days. Then replaced it in the string. It worked fine. Now as long as I keep it on top of the tower, (and not behind it on a shelf,) it stays cool enough and works fine.

I can't explain either fix, but they worked for me. Hence, my mentioning them here.
