Does anyone have any idea how to correct a streaming problem when i try and runand media palyer the CPu usage shuts up to 90-100% and when i try to open further programmes the streaming stutters and stops or becomes garbled. I would reformat but not this weekend it may be the same after a clean ionstall of Windows.

I have been having that trouble lately. I have so many song files that I believe they are taking up all the room.
I think I will get more memory and that will help. I have 500MGB but I am going to double that...al

Fiona,
So that others can help you it is always helpful to state your operating system (Windows version) and as much about the speed of your CPU, amount of RAM etc.. that you can.
There always other factors but I listed a few common problems.
Things to try:
1. Each program you run takes up RAM on a temporary basis. Re-boot your computer if it's been on for a while to free up as much RAM as possible. (it will reset the RAM automatically) A CPU (Brain) runs too fast to read the hard drive directly. Therefore we use RAM and every program gets loaded from your hard drive (storage area) in RAM first where the CPU can use it. When the CPU runs out of RAM it makes a temporary RAM area on the disk drive and swaps back there again. (if you have room) Because the speed of any hard drive is slower than the general RAM, every program that uses the temp RAM will slow down. RAM runs in nano seconds (very fast) and Hard drives run in milliseconds.(slow) Hard drive access is very slow and that's why performance PC have lots of RAM installed and the reason we use RAM in the first place.
2. Only load programs that are necessary while you are streaming audio. Each one will use some RAM.
3. If you always have performance problems you should get someone knowledgeable to check the amount of RAM on your Computer and Increase the RAM on the computer if it has less than 500 MB. I use 1 GB.
4. Have someone knowledgeable clean your TEMP files in the Windows Temp directory.
5. Ensure you have lots of free space on your Hard Dive and remove any junk folders/ programs. Then empty the re-cycle bin because if it's there, it's still using space on your hard drive.
6. Defrag you Hard Drive with the built in program for your operation system. You should re-start your computer in the Safe mode first.
7. Always use anti virus programs and update your data files often if it's not automated. Same rule goes for Anti-spyware.
Spyware programs can run on your PC without you knowing it and use up resources without you knowledge.

8. If you don't have a good firewall program go to zonealarm.com and download their free version.
9. All modern computers use various fans. They usually have one on the CPU (brain), others built in both you computer case and power supply. Have someone knowledgeable blow all of the dust from the fans with a can of anti-static air. If the fan is plugged with dirt and dust it prevents units like the CPU from running at the correct temp. The increased temperature can REDUCE performance dramatically. Check the fans at least every 12 months and more if you live in a dusty area.
10 Check your MP3 player software to see that you are running the latest version . Older versions often have bugs that have been resolved with newer releases.

Thanmks for your help my sister is a nn It constulant and looks after my machine she built it. I have an AMD 64 512 ram Use AVG and Zone labs Pro I had to take Microsft Anit SPyware because it reduced my computer to a crawl problems stem from that. I clean out temp files every day or try to. It getting a reinstall on Monday wuld have done it yesterday but for the Convention i have a netwiork whihc my sister set up and ive not done that before.

Bob-Thanks for the detailed good advice, I am sure it will help me too. I took of the MS antispyware program as it was really slowing down a lot, I also found that Norton anti virus 2004 slowed down my computer a lot so I put the 2002 norton back in and it speeded right up../..al
