Renaming a JPEG

Post by Bruce Wutzke »

I used to be able to rename a .jpg to "guitar"
or whatever....no file extension was necessary.
I changed hard drives and now unless it has a .jpg extension, it renders the picture useless.
Is there a switch or something so I can name a picture without having to have the extension?

I'm going to assume this is for Windows XP. Open "My computer" and then double click on the drive that has been giving you this problem. A window with the contents of the drive should open. On that window's menu select Tools -> Folder Options... Select the View tab and check the option "Hide extensions for known file types". Then click the "Apply to All Folders" button and hit OK.

The extension has to be there in Windows, though you can hide it in Windows Explorer.
