Computer -> 2nd computer file transfers

Post by David Mason »

I have my regular computer set up with internet access, word processing, listening to music, printing, the usual stuff. Somebody just gave me another computer that I can set up as a music recording-only station. I don't really have any reason to hook this second one to the internet, but if I need to download drivers or sound files from the net, can I download them to my first computer and then transfer them via some sort of cable to the second one? Both computers have USB ports and some other jacks - is there a website that explains how to identify what the hookups are by shape and the number of pins, how to softwarily activate or enable ports, etc.? Is there maybe a current book that explains? I have more time to teach myself stuff than money to pay a real techie to fix me up.
[This message was edited by David Mason on 09 April 2005 at 12:13 AM.]

David,

What OS are you using? Assuming Windows XP, go to Start->Help and Support....type "direct connect" in the search box and that should get you started. Also might want to do a search for "New Connection Wizard". To take a look at the wizard go to Start->All Programs->Accesories->Communications->New Connection Wizard.

David,

This is a picture of typical rear panel connections....your computer(s) may or may not be similar.

David.... an 8' USB LINK CABLE (SKU#283437) from COMPUSA will accomplish your data transfer between two PCs.

Connect your PCs USB ports with the above cable and the files will be displayed on both computer screens. You then select with your mouse the files you wish to transfer.

I transfer successfully between Windows 98 and XP.

For just some drivers and sound files, I wouldn't mess around with hard-wiring the computers, I'd just save them to a CD on the web-enabled computer. Both computers have CD drives, right?

A 650MB CD can hold a lot of files, and if your computers have DVD drives, you've got 4.7Gb to play with.

Thanks, gentlemen. It looks like I can go through either the USB posts or the serial ports - I have to root around the whole guest/host configuration thing and see what I have on each computer, but this got me pointed in the right direction.
