XP folder files

Was using Win98.....now using XP.
In Win98, when I opened a folder, the number of files in the folder would be displayed in the bottom left corner under the left most colum.

XP doesn't show this. It will only show the amount of space the folder uses. This is done by placing the mouse over the file folder and a pop out will appear with the info.

I miss this feature.
Anyone know how I can smarten XP up, or myself.

In the menu bar, select View-Status Bar.
