Monitor Blackout

Post by Jody Carver »

I need help. After booting my pc last night,my pc froze. I was unable to shut the pc down. Shut down manually..When I did I heard a pop and crackel sound from the processor, my monitor then would not boot up and the lights "blue" and "amber" were flashing. The amber light goes on and off and there is no monitor. I called Sony and they cant help. I am using another pc now,can you give me any idea's. The processor seems to be wroking but unable to send the signal to the monitor.

Thanks I appreciate any help I can get.

This does not sound good Jody. If you can find a spare PC & monitor, try swapping the monitor on another machine. Sounds like maybe you let the smoke outa some electronics. My video card went in my Win95 machine several months ago and took the Biostar motherboard with it.

Good luck.

That happened to me once.
I had a seperate Video Card, which was common at the time.

I removed the Video Card and discovered the large chip on it was bad. I could see a crack in it!

Now-a-daze the video card is often built into the motherboard. Image

Sounds like you need professional help, my friend.

If I needed a new monitor I'd go for one of those flat LCD ones. They are now close to the price of the CRT ones.

Since all my monitors are old, and were expensive, I don't much about brands.

Another alternative if you don't want to fork over the bucks for a new monitor.

People (and companys) are always upgrading to new stuff just to keep current. Used monitors may be available from your local computer store for a nominal price, and generally they work fine.

My son got about 8 rigs from a company that was upgrading. It was simply, "The're in the hallway. Take em if you want em." No charge.

I ended up taking 6 to my office and we use them to burn in various pieces of equipment before we ship them out with a new rig. They may be used, but they ain't used up. (Waylon)

The flat monitors are a good deal these days.
Unless you are doing color precise photo and design work,
any monitor of the size you like will be fine.

Just balance size and price, then take it home..

Also buy a better suirge protector while you;re there....

Hi, Jody. I also have to buy a new monitor ASAP, unfortunately.

As the slim, flat-panel (LCD) monitors become the standard, the old-style cathode-ray (CRT) monitors are getting dirt-cheap...

You can buy a luxurious 19" or 21" CRT monitor for the same price as a 15" or 17" LCD monitor, but it's much, much easier to stare at an LCD screen for long periods of time.

Maybe Fender makes a triple-screen flat-panel? With an 8-string processor.

Now with the flatscreen I don't have to run the AC in the studio, in february,
as much as I needed to with a CRT monitor.
The studio is VERY well insulated...
