Email phantom attachments

Post by Jon Light (deceased) »

I just installed the WinXP service pack, I also just downloaded the new AVG7 (I've been using the previous version). I'm using Outlook Express. Now all my incoming emails have the paper clip icon indicating an attachment, even though there is no attachment (I've sent myself some simple tests and they come in with a paperclip). I don't know if this relates to the service pack, the AVG, or something else. Does this have any meaning to anyone?

Perhaps Outlook Express has been set to a higher security level by Service Pack 2, which would include changing the checkbox on the security tab to not download attachments. You can verify this by going to (Outlook Express) Tools > Options > Security. If this is checked, uncheck it and all of your attachments will be downloaded normally.

This feature has been present for the last two years I think, but was not turned on by default until XP SP2. MIcrosoft's thinking is that they must now protect the Plebes from themselves because the plebes do not know about dangerous email attachments, onor about installing and maintaining up-to-date anti virus solutions with email scanners.

Thanks. No, I've checked, unchecked and messed around with all these configs and they have no effect. And just a clarification--I have no problem receiving attachments. It's just that even mails containing nothing but text come in with an attachment icon. When I open them they are routine, no problems. But for some reason everything now has the paperclip icon. Ah, one of life's mysteries.

Just a many of the browser problems can be solved with a switch to FireFox, so can many of the email issues be resolved by changing your Client(program). OE is as arcane as IE. "Thunderbird", free, by the same folks who make FireFox should help. In the long run though, I would suggest getting a Mac.

Thanks Jon. the Mac--well that just isn't gonna happen in the near term. And unfortunately even though I do use Firefox, I just recently tried TBird and it failed to import my OE folders--a fairly ornate structure that has evolved over the last 5 years where I file & save pretty much all of my correspondences--and I don't want to start over. My problem for sure.

Jon Light-You mentioned XP SP 2. I have a update notice on my tool bar. So I went to install it. When the process bar show about half way, it stops and won't go any further to "Finished". So I have to turn off the computer and restart to get it off my screen.I have tried to install this update 3 or 4 times and have sent in the "error" report and heard nothing! Microsoft still has too many bugs in their programs, that they like to have users find for them. Saves them a lot of programmer cost....al Image Image

Jon,
I suppose a detailed folder structure is hard to give up. This forum may help. I know that I have been able to interpret file structure and folders when I exported from OE,plain Outlook, and Groupwise, on the Stinkpad they give me at work to my home rig. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=173700&highlight=import

The phantom messages are just AVG informing that it hasn`t found any viruses in the incoming mail

Olli--indeed, the body of my incoming and outgoing messages now contains text saying that it has been cheked by AVG--it didn't use to do this. Maybe you are right.

Jon--thanks for the link. I will look into it when I get the chance. Appreciate the help.
