3 1/2" Floppies.

Is there a floppy disc, formatted with more than 1.44MB capacity ?? I don't have a CD Burner and I'm trying to download some saves in case this old thing gives out on me...

I think 1.44MB is as high as 31/2 disk goes but you can use more then one disk to download information I do all the time.

Years ago there was a 3&1/2" floppy standard that supported 2.88 MB of storage, but it never seemed to catch on for some reason. Don't know if it's still supported & available anymore, but it might be worth checking in to.

Use WinZip or even the old DOS based PKZip. Both will let you create zip files that span floppies. This means that you can have one huge zip file of data on as many floppies as it takes.

Years ago when floppies really were floppies and not the ones with the plastic shells we see today, we must have built 50 machines for Memorex, to burnish or polish the face of the magnetic discs before they were inserted into their hard paper envelopes. We even built equipment to score the envelopes so they could be more accurately folded over the discs.

I'm talking late 70's early 80's. The discs were either 5-1/4" dia or 8" dia. I don't remember what they held but they were very small capacity. How far we've come.

Anybody remember those old dinosaurs?

And Paul, if you can do it, spend 50 bucks for a CD burner to save your stuff on. You'll not regret it.

Funny, they didn't seem like dinosaurs then. The company I worked for at the time ran two DEC VAX 11-780's and one 11-785. The default boot device for these machines was an 8" floppy.

There was a 3.5 inch Superdrive that would hold 128 MB. We had them on our PCs about four years ago , but very few of them work now. They used to be able to read and write normal floppies too.
Just about everyone here has ditched floppies for USB memory sticks or Pen drives. They are so cheap now that the smaller ones- only 16meg, are often given away, and you can buy them up to 512meg.
Think about going to them for portable storage.

Thank You All for the information. What is motivating me to download is the fact that this four year Compaq is worse than any of my wives ever were. I doubt if I would trust loading any new features into it because I'm certain that would be the final blow. The last thing I loaded in was a Kodak Picture program and it tooks weeks to get back where I could operate somewhat again. I still have to use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to shut it down because the normal start column click no longer functions.

On the other hand, I am really in hog heaven with the picture capabilities and have made a lot of good things of my grandson, Caleb. It was worth that !!
