Yahoo question

Post by Ken Williams »

Why does the Yahoo homepage here at home look different from the one at my work computer? For example, the items just below the search box, like weather, maps, people search, etc. are separated by a comma and are in random fashion on my home computer. On the other computer they are listed in vertical columns. There are other small differences like this but I can't recall them at the time. Both have the same URL address in the address box. Is there some kind of option that I've clicked on to account for the differences. They were identical until a couple of weeks ago, when I noticed that the Yahoo on my home computer had a somewhat different appearance. I do not have a Yahoo account.

Ken,

Do you have different browsers at work versus home? Perhaps just different versions of the same browser? When your browser sends out a request for a web server to return a page (read: you click on a link or type in a URL and hit RETURN), your browser sends out a bit of identifying info about itself along with the page request. Yahoo may be set up to return different format pages depending on which browser (and version of browser) is making the request. That way they make sure the page they are sending you is compatible with your browser (e.g., doesn't contain features that your browser can't handle, etc.). So if you have one type/version of browser at work and another at home, you may indeed be getting sent pages with different formats to make the respective browsers happy.

Bill, thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying about different browser versions. I hadn't thought of that. Only thing is, both computers run XP and internet explorer, and I'm pretty sure that both Yahoo pages were close to identical until a couple a weeks ago. Several weeks ago I had problems with browser hijacker, extra toolbar on explorer, and a couple of other issues. A friend fixed all these problems. But, a couple of weeks ago the extra toolbar on internet explorer was back. That's seems to be about the time I noticed a change in the Yahoo page. Anyway, it seems likely that the reappearance of the extra toolbar and the change in the Yahoo page may be related.
I'm going to call my friend later today to get instructions for removing the extra toolbar, and see if that makes a difference.
It's really not that much of an issue. I was just curious about the difference. Thanks for your help.

Ken,

Hey I was just reading through some of the posts in this section and noticed this one. I have the same exact issue where I work also. Yahoo.com looks different at work than at home. At work it looks like they are using a different .css file on their formatting and then I go home and it is Times New Roman font. I work for an HUGE company in Chicago so maybe it is something that they do, but I like the look of it better at work!

HA!

Cheers!
Mark

I was going to just let this topic die but, when I connected to the internet a few minutes ago, my Yahoo page is back like it was before. In other words, now the home and work computers Yahoo pages match.

Strange???

It may be that the page you were seeing at home was cached, and the cache finally got cleared and a fresh page loaded, making the home & work views match up.
