computer slowed down suddenly

I just installed Norton 2004 anti-virus from a new cd I just purchased at Ofice Max.. I had 2002 before . I installed the new one on 8-11- and right after that from then on, every thing I clik on takes much longer to load.
It was fine with the 2002 version. Very fast. Now it is Unacceptable!!!

What is wrong? If I have to put up with this, I wish I had the 2002 version back. Help!!!...al

Al, I was having slow-down and hang-up problems and had removed several recent programs (as you are considering doing)thinking one of them might be the problem, but nothing helped.

Then I tried "ad-eliminator" that someone on the Forum recommended. I first downloaded the trial program, and then purchased the regular program, and the difference is amazing....my computer performs once again like new.

The program identified and eliminated more than 300 ad/spy programs that had been added to my computer that I was unaware of. I had so much junk in my system that I had to reboot several times a day to keep it running.

I haven't had much success with most of the programs that profess to do this, but I recommend this one to anyone with similar problems.

I know you never ask my opinion and I have sent Al email before but I can tell you that virus protection like Norton just causes more problems than any other virus program.I don't use one of any kind because they check everything out and slow you down.I also use the Mozilla Firefox web browser which keeps out the popups all together. I know most people use virus protection because they are scared of infecting their computers but if I ever get a virus I will just reformat and start over. I do work on them so I realize that helps too. Just don't open anything you don't recognize in your email or ads that come on your screen uninvited. You can also go into the startup and go to run and type in msconfig and stop any programs that you don't want to run in the back ground all the time.This will speed up you computer too.Only my opinion...RS

Thanks Gene and Ron.-What I don't understand I had Norton anti virus 2002 for a full year and it worked smooth and fast and showed it was working.

It expired so I got a CD of Norton 2004 and now it is jut practiclly crippling my computer it is so slow. Sonemne times it says "Program not responding" . This all happened Aug 11 , AFTER I installed Norton 2004. No way to communicate with them in the entire manual, no web, no email address. They must not want to be bothered with customers problems......al

Me too Al....."Program not responding" was the screen prompt I received most often, sometimes resulting in a hangup and requiring a reboot.

....but since I installed the ad-eliminator program above, my computer is "faster than a speeding bullet", and I've had not even one "hang-up" or "Program Not Responding" notice since.

.....by the way, I have had Norton on all of my computers since day 1 with automatic and annual updates, and have never had a problem with it.

Al you might try the program that Gene is talking about and it could solve your problem too.I know virus protection is very usefull but it can sometimes stop programs you actually want to work so you have to disable it sometimes to install them.Goodluck....RS

I installed Adware and it still did the same slowdown. I think there was a bug in my Norton 2004 disc, because the old one was very good. anyway, I un- installed Norton 2004 and adware and my computer is running fine and pretty fast again. No more "not responding" messages.
I may Re-install Norton and maybe it will be alright, but it took over two hours on the first install and scan. It found nothing wrong. e'll see...thanks for the advice.....this forum is great....al

Only thing I can think of is system requirements for norton 2004. It is a memory hog so make sure you aren't running short of memory. I've never seen a bad Norton install disk and have installed Norton 100's of times so although that may be the issue here, I'm more inclined to think it's taking up too much resources.

Doug-you may be right on the Memory. Norton 2004 is a bigger program than Norton 2002 was and takes a lot more resources, so that could have slowed down things considerably. I have 500mg of Ram but been thinking of doubling that. I do have lot of music and stuff now on the computer.Norton's initial scan of all my files took over 2 hours, no virus though,so there is a lot there.
Gene-I tried the Adware and it worked good, showed I had the usual cookies on it. al

Al, it's important to delete cookies often
especially if you surf a lot - if you don't not that important
go to Temporary Internet Files and have a look see
if it's loaded, wipe 'em out
you'll get the forum ones back pronto as well as the ones from your favorites sites

I've seen this slow down with NAV '04 a few times. Mostly with dial-up accounts on IE 6. Go to internet properties, advanced tab. Scroll down to security heading. Un-check the box that reads "check for publisher's certificate revocation" Click apply then OK and reboot. Also, if you have one of the new PC's without a floppy, you may want to turn off NAV "scan floppies on shutdown" in the advanced options. Hope this helps, John

Cookies should be deleted on a regular basis as they do slow down your pc.... Also run your Adware or Spybot programs which are both free on the Internet. Just one question Al... did you Uninstall your 2002 Nortons before you installed 2004 ?

The Norton 2004 says they uninstall the previous 2002 version automatically. I didn't want them to do it, but they did.

Fortunately I had the 2002 Norton Anti-virus disc that has been working great for over a year, so I re-installed it off the CD after Uninstalling the 2004 version.

Now! everything is working smooth and fast.

It scans all my incoming and outgoing Email .
I haven't had a virus since I had it. So I am sticking to the 2002 version, and just getting live automatic updates.

One good thing, Norton has a 60 day money back warranty, so I am sending the 2004 CD back and see what happens.

A couple of years ago and I had Mcafee, and I like Norton much better.

Thanks guys for all the very good help and advice. I appreciate it.
