Do they let you both download it and have CD(s) shipped? I like having the disc(s) and would like to download it for immediate use also.

So guys, should I purchase the extra $20 software bundle they are offering?

The only item on it that interests me is the Video Tutorial Pack. Is it worthwhile?

Yup, just got it yesterday. I'm new to BIAB so it's taking me some time to get into it, but for what I want it for (practicing jazz standards), I can tell it's going to be great.

One note (so to speak). After installination, my standard musical notation was looking strange. I posted on pgmusic's forum and had an answer in minutes.
The .sit file that hold the fonts, for some reason, during installation is not being put in the proper directory. Simply unstuffing the file and moving it to the /System/Library/Fonts folder fixed it.

Sorry for the tangent. In a word, cool.

I paid the extra $20, but I'm not sure what I got for it. I seemed to be missing a lot of styles anyway. That was a drag until I realized that I had tons of styles on my PC. I copied all of my BIAB stuff from the PC over to the Mac and put the PC styles in the Mac's Styles folder. It all works flawlessly, as far as I can tell. I even played songs with styles that I created on the PC without any problems.

I did get bit by that font problem, but I figured it out pretty quickly.

The default MIDI sounds on the Mac are sort of micky mouse, though. How can I connect to some better instrument sounds?

How do you copy them from the PC to the Mac?

I went the simplest route. I created a share of the whole drive in Windows, and then just opened it from the Mac and dragged the folder over. Both computers are connected to the same router for internet access. That also allows them to see each other.[This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 27 June 2004 at 03:17 PM.]

I had BIAB on my old G3 Mac and used the built-in QuickTime Musical Instruments under OS 8.6. They were much plinkier sounding than the current OS-X QuickTime instruments that my freshly purchased BIAB 11 uses on my G4 machine. What sound card did your laptop have?

Incidentally, the older QuickTime Musical Instruments, as tinny as they were, worked out pretty well at the one steel jam where I brought my G3 to cover BIAB. The newer sounds would fare even better. Though maybe not as well as your previous sound card.

(Speaking of that, do you think you'll be able to cover BIAB at future SJ jams with your PowerBook?)

I used Virtual Sound Canvas to get the sounds on my Toshiba laptop, Bill. Is there a similar software synth for OS X?

Yes, the same one, in fact. Try the Mac version of the Roland VSC.

Trick is, they'll only sell it in conjunction with another PG product of $29 or greater. If you bought the OS X BIAB recently, I'd call the sales office and tell 'em you didn't know there was a Mac VSC available and see if they'll sell it to you.

I don't think that VSC runs on OSX. I'd love to be wrong about that, because I used it with BIAB on OS9 and liked it a lot. Has anyone actually tried the newest version and run it in native OSX?

I'm kind of in the same boat, I'm looking for a good software synth, maybe something even better than the Roland VSC. I have a limited version of Reason, which has some pretty good sampled sounds, but I was only able to get one instrument at a time to it from BIAB.

I also had trouble getting BIAB to work properly with my Alesis SR-16 drum machine. I can't seem to get all the drum sounds that I know are available on the SR-16. Anybody have a .DK (Drum kit file) that works on the Alesis?

In general, I like the Core Midi setup in OSX. It's way easier to deal with than OMS or Freemidi was in OS9.

I emailed PG music about an OS-X compatible Virtual Sound Canvas, and got this reply:

As it turns out, the VSC is not in fact compatible with OS X yet, so you haven't really missed out! Keep an eye on our website, though, in case Roland makes a newer version which is OS X compatible.

I tried band in a box and was so dissapointed I didnt get my regular sounds that I always used so compared to them the cheesy sound I was hearing may have had something to do with it. Now if this program is actually capable of even generating a drum track that sounds like a real drummer it would be a dream for me. From some of the people Ive heard that are using it it has to be better than what Ive heard. Is this machine actually capeable of generating life like drum tracks or is it just a good practice tool For sounds I use nuendo with battery for drums and DFH and double platnum drums for the sounds trilogy a vst instrument for bass, for most every thing else I use kontakt which also funtions as a vst instrument in nuendo. I use the garritan string library along with the vienna orhestra cube for strings, barstown audio for grand piano along with my kurzweil I do a lot of sound tracks for people and if I could find a fast way of generating a good drum track since Im not a drummer it would save a lot of time for me. Now unless I call in a real drummer I use beat boy. I would love to hear from some of the band in a box users out there

Jeff,

You just have to go to the MIDI menu in BIAB and direct the drum track to the MIDI device of your choice. BIAB can sound as bad or as good as the instruments you choose (or have available) to play its assorted instrument tracks. It seems your default setup was to use the thin sounding system-based instruments in your PC, the ones that internet MIDI files use.
