BIAB Pitch ????

Post by Bob Watson »

I have version 10 of BIAB and the pitch of the backup tunes I make is sharp to "A 440". My sound card supports master tuning. I have gone to the master tuning window and set it back to "A 440" and it is sharp to 3 different tuners that I have, which all seem to be the same. I can get it close when I set it to -3456, but it still seems a little hard to play along to. Any ideas?

Bob, that's a new one on me. Have you tried going to the tuner window and putting out an audible tone (in BiaB)and checking it with your tuner? What kind off sound card do you have? If it's off that way then you probably could email PGMusic with the problem. They are real good about responding promptly.--Henry

Henry, Thanks for your reply. Like you suggested, I used the tuner in BIAB to create an audible tone to find out how sharp I was. After that I lowered the pitch to match "A 440" on my regular tuner, then I matched that pitch with the master pitch in BIAB, which was -2816. Now when I tune my steel to my tuner I can play along with the BIAB tunes I have written and it sounds right. I suspect that the problem lies with either my sound card or some sort of windows adjustment. Thanks again, your suggestion led me in the right direction to solve my problem.

I decided to give it a try. I booted up BIAB 2004 (Windows XP) and had it generate an A 440 tone. I placed my Korg tuner (calibrated to A 440) in front of the speaker. The Korg registered the BIAB A 440 as approximately A 439. I adjusted the cents on the BIAB tuner to match 440.

I am using the Roland VSC software synth that came with BIAB as my "soundcard".

So now what do I do? Is BIAB now permanently to tuned correctly? I doubt it. After I tuned BIAB I generated a standard MIDI file of a BIAB song and looked at the file in a MIDI sequencer. There were no events in the file to indicate a retuning of the frequency.

Any ideas?

Gerald, I adjusted the note generated by the BIAB tuner to match my korg tuner. Then I went to the master tuning window in BIAB ( go to GM at the top of the BIAB window, click and go down to "Master Tuning" in the drop down menu and click on it) and matched the note that the BIAB tuner was generating to the "Master Tuning setting" by decreasing the cents until they sounded the same ( click the "Sound note 'A' " tab to generate a sound in master tuning). I doubt it is perfect but it is darn close. Yours doesn't sound as far off as mine, but if you feel you need to adjust it, this is what worked for me. Good Luck!

Band in a box it's self generates no tones, but your virtual synth app or external synth does.
The problem must lie there.

If it is software based try reloading the software.
If not, then it is likely a PC sound card problem. try reloading it's drivers.

A purely software issue would likely not be anything but a bit glitch repairable by re-installing..
