my computer won't download. help!

For some rason my computer quit downloading about 1 1/2 yrs ago. it's a compaq, and when I click on a link to hear a music clip this is what happens-
the real one player shows up, then about a second later this pops up
"your modem is not connected"
would you like to establish a connection?
when I click yes, then a window with my e-mail addy, and password comes up, then I click connect, and it says"the port is already open" then it goes back to where it started at real-one player. I've checked my phone line, and made sure ever thing is connected good, this is driving me crazy! I want to be able to hear the music clips.
can somebody tell me what to do in lay-man terms, I don't know much about puters. thanks

You could try deleting RealPlayer. Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs.
Then do a Windows update to make sure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player and maybe it will play the files. You could also reinstall RealPlayer from their web site.

Ok Cal, I'm a computer idiot. so after I delete real player, how do I do a windows update? thanks for your help.

In Windows XP you'll see it in the side bar of the control panel. In Windows 98 I think it might be in the start menu (click the Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop and look for Windows Update in the menu that comes up.) Microsoft will scan your computer for any updates you need and you select the ones you want and install them. Of course, you have to be connected to the Internet when you do this. If you still can't find it, click Start/Search and search for Windows Update. If you have Windows Media Player already installed you can click on Help in the menu bar at the top and click on Check for Updates. Hope this helps.

Windows Update is also an option under the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.

Thanks a lot. guys. I deleted real palyer, then done the windows update, and it shows media player to be installed. but, I still can't download anything.I get the same thing as before."your modem is not connected". I reckon I need a new computer!

Can you right click on the link and choose 'save target as'? You may be able to save the file to your drive and then open it in RA or another player.

Terry-- Sounds like you may have had a modem installed in the past which you do not now have. The windows connection manager will associate a modem to each dial-up connection you create and 'remembers' it. Bring up 'MY COMPUTER' and then 'DIAL-UP NETWORKING' to see the 'connections' that have been created. Then, RIGHT click one and LEFT click 'PROPERTIES'. At the bottom of the window, you'll see a 'CONNECT USING' box.

The box has a button on the right side to scroll thru whatever modems the system THINKS are available. The one displayed in the box is currently associated with that particular dial-up connecter. Make sure that each connection has the correct modem name displayed.

I've had it happen to me. Created a connection and the only modem installed at the time was associated. Later that modem got replaced but the system thought it was still available. For various reasons, I usually have several dial-up connections. (Multiple accounts with different ISP's.)

Happen to create a new connection and the replacement modem gets associated just fine with that connection. Go to use the other connection though, and the old modem is still the default and won't work. Scrolling brings up the current modem and makes it the new default.

Few people do the things I get into and seldom have more than one connection or more than one modem at a time. If you only have ONE connection showing in Dial-Up Networking, and you are using Dial-Up to get on the Forum, then the correct modem must be associated and my scenario is just BS.

Micheal, that works.

I tried that before and it wouldn't work, but it was before I done the windows update.it plays through media player.
Man! I'm glad I can finally listen to clips.
