File Properties question

Post by Joe Delaronde »

I have 2 folders on a CD\RW.
I tried deleting some of the files but the " Read Only" & "Archives" are clicked on. I get "Cannot delete. An invalid Dos function"

I tried changing the attributes but get, "Unable to set attributes"

What causes the "Read only" to be active when I never clicked it on?

I copied the files to the hard drive.

I want to delete one folder from the CD\RW.
Or do I have to re-format the cd????/
-Win98
I still remem ber some Dos commands, but forget how to boot into Dos????
From there I think I could delete the folder.
Thanks
Joe

Joe-- You didn't say *how* you tried to change the CD file attributes. Probably used Windows Explorer and right-clicked to bring up the 'properties'???? The attribute flags are a part of the info ACTUALLY written when a file is created. Therefor, modifying that data would require writing to the CD - which Explorer is not designed to do. You'd need CD burning software to modify the contents of a CD. --Everett

Joe, So maybe what you can do now, is copy the folders to your hard drive, modify them and then reburn the updated folder. Aren't there programs like InCD (Nero) that treat a CD/RW disk like a floppy.....so you can add, modify and delete direct drom the CD/RW (not CD/R) disk?

Thanks Everette
Tommy, I finally done that.
I was allowed to copy them to the hard drive. From there I could change the attributes using Properties (right click, etc.)

However, to recover my CD\RW to make it usable I had to re-format it.

The problem was the CD got too full. There was no room make the changes.

Thank you all

You can't alter files on a standard CDR. CDRs don't function like a hard drive, even if the disk is rewritable.

The only way to do so is to initially format the CDR for packet writing (UDF). Conventional CD writing creates ISO 9660 sessions, which are erasable on a CD-RW, but not editable.

For example, if you installed EZ-CD Creator's DirectCD extension, you can select it when formatting a CDR. Then, you can drag/drop/remove files from it just like a hard drive.
