Do you have to have a website to post a picture? If the answer is NO, would someone be so kind as to walk me step by step thru the procedure?

In other words, IF I have a picture in my computer's "My pictures" folder; with all the files having "JPG" extensions, is it possible to post one of these pictures on this forum; and if so, how do I do it?

I think the answer is no, you don't need a web site. I say this because I don't have a web site, and I posted a picture and links to some mp3's.

I copied them to some disk space that my ISP (Internet Service Provider; i.e. Earthlink) provides for all its subscribers. I think all ISP's do this so you probably have at least 10 MB of free space.

You don't need a web site, but you need web space. That is, hard disk space on a web server somewhere. Many ISPs provide 10 or 20 MB of web space to each customer, but you have to read and understand their documentation to access it.

I am using Bellsouth DSL and in fact after an email advising me, I did some checking and found they offer free up to 10MB of space for a personal website. Upon trying to follow Bellsouth's instructions on how to use it, I got confused and gave up the idea.

I do not know about anyone else, but I have been in the technical world all my life, spent a lifetime in deep technical analysis; but I have found since day one on computers, that they have consistently made just about everything next to impossible to use from a user standpoint.

I admire and applaud all of you that seem to take to this with little or no problems. Never once Have I EVER tried to load software programs, or hardware that things appeared simple to me and I did not go thru untold hours trying to make the simplest things work.

Typically, you need an FTP program to transfer files to web space. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. There are a variety of free FTP programs available.

FTP has been in use for decades and while it's not particularly hard to use, the computer jargon employed is unfamiliar to most people nowadays.

Carl, Here is a link to the instructions that my ISP gives: click here Go to the link on the left "Web page Help" They explain it pretty simply. Use WS-FTP-LE, a free program available at Tucows.com and other download sites. To post a photo on the SGF, just put the correct link in your post. I went to the link, but then got into a no mans-land of options. Which is par for me.

Unlike most, I have to have step by step instructions that don't assume. I find that is my downfall.

I don't need any special programs; I can just use Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, and put ftp://ebovine@ftp-www.earthlink.net/ into the Address line. Then my "Personal Web Space" appears just like another disk or directory on my computer. I can move files in and out of there in the same way that I can move files around on my own PC's hard disk.
Carl, it might be that easy for you if you can find what to put in the Address line. Your ISP should have a home site that tells you what address to use.

Earnest, I tried this, but if someone else wants to access a picture, they will need a password. If they have a password, Windows will force a download, not a view. On the forum you need an HTTP link without password.

Could it be something like:

I wish to thank sooooooo many who have responded on here and in emails. I have gotten sooo many from ppl I do not even know; as well as those I do know.

I am overwhelmed that soo many would respond. And I thank you very much.

Here is what I have achieved so far. Thru the gracious step by step instructions provided by Peter of Cape Town, South Africa I was able to post pics in the test section of this forum. I am so greatful to Peter for sticking with me. It is difficult for me to learn any more.

And there were so many that offered, I sincerely hope I have not offended anyone by following Peter's instructions.

I only have one problem now. My ISP limits the photo file to 150K per photo. Would you believe the photo I wanted to post is 259K? Yet all the ones I posted in the test were under a 100K. Not sure why. It is the same physical size. I guess it is more detailed I suppose.

Just my luck. "A nickle late and a dollar short." Oh well.

About the size of photos, The jpeg format allows you to compress a picture in a lower resolution form. The lower resolution versions will have a litle less detail, but most look fine on the internet. Images of less that 50k work well on the internet. They load fast for the viewer and take less time to upload. This picture, for example, is only 23k:

I went to Feedback and testing, downloaded your picture, went to Photoshop, changed the size and lowered the resolution, now it's larger, but the resolution is just 23K:

Any of the photo imaging programs will allow you to "save for the web"[the command used for Abobe Photoshop] this will reduce the resolution to a more manageable size. Good luck, Carl.
