Help! svchost.exe error message

Post by Terry Farmer »

When I'm online I will get an error message that says svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. then I can't do certain functions like open links or get offline without rebooting the pc. Microsoft suggests a fix that involves editing the registry. I did that but it didn't fix the problem. I also installed Adaware but that didn't help either. I'm running windows 2000. Ideas?

Terry,
The MSBlaster virus is known to cause this error in Win2000. Here are a couple of links that should give you some info. One is for a patch from Microsoft to remove the MSblaster virus if you have it, and the other is some info from Symantic.

Hope this helps,
Lem

You may be able to avert the shutdown by typing 'shutdown -a' into your command line when the shutdown dialog box displays. This should allow you to download patches without interruption. I successfully removed this worm from my system (xp) with the instructions found HERE.

I had the same virus. The microsoft website has a link that explains how to remove the virus ( sorry, I don't have that info for you). Also, install the service packs (sp 1, sp 2 etc. ), I have installed sp 1, sp2, and sp 4 and everything seems to be working right. Good Luck!

Thanks, folks. I got enough updates downloaded and installed, sloooooooow process because of dial up connection and svchost.exe stopping everything (it knew I wanted to kill it) to finally allow me to run the MSBlaster fixer. The error message hasn't come back now for a while so I'm cautiously optimistic. This forum is fantastic. I've been fighting that thing for months. Thanks again.
