Windows Installer

Post by Richard Bass »

Running W2000Pro on Dell Latitude Laptop. On startup Windows Installer Box pops up. I am installing nothing, and there is nothing in the Browse Box. This started about a week ago. I have checked for spyware and virus's, the computer is clean. It takes 3 clicks of cancel to get this box to go away. Any hints on how to get rid of this box will be appreciated. Thanks. Richard

Click on Start, then Run. Type in "msconfig" then click on the startup tab. Everything that is listed can probably be unchecked. This will prevent any "extra" programs from running when Windows starts up.

MSCONFIG/Startup is not the only place where an app can be automatically launched from, but it is the first place to look.
Here's a URL with a good (and growing) database and analysis of common autostarted buggers that run "in the background" (like it or not): http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Richard,

Unfortunately "msconfig" was left out of the Win200 operating system (a HUGE mistake IMHO). However, your problem hints that a file title cftmon.exe was disabled from your startup somehow. Now, just because msconfig was left out of the OS doesn't mean you can't disable startup items. Have you used a third party tool to disable any startup programs? If so, go back and "check" or "enable" 'cftmon.exe'. That program is from MS Office and actually checks your license and installed copies everytime you restart.

Let me know if you need any help with this...

Thanks!
Mark
