Warning: deluge of bogus screensaver email

Post by Brad Bechtel »

For some reason today I got 196 emails (a typical day is usually around 40 or so). Of those 196 emails, 125 were "OE 6 Patch", "Free Screensavers" (from Disney, Playboy, Yahoo, and other reputable names), and other viruses and spam.
I know there's supposed to be a general attack on web sites on Sunday, but I hadn't heard anything about a virus distribution going on. This is far more than my usual amount of spam.
Be careful, and don't open anything sent to you by someone you don't know.

Take that warning up a notch and be very skeptical about mail that says it's from someone you DO know. If I'm sending an attachment to someone I'll first send an email telling them I'm sending them something. Something that says it's a picture you asked for from your mother (how nice!) can be a virus that she knows nothing about. These are just the realities today. Better to diss yo momma than to lose your hardrive.
