Confused and upset.

Post by Anne Marie O Keeffe »

When I checked my mail this evening along with my usual spam and regular correspondence there were three e mails with attachments of the same size (97K) all with different titles........... one was from someone I don't know another was from someone whom I do know but have never before received e mail from and the third was from someone from whom I receive e mail and fwds from about every day, but I immediately became suspicious that all three were the same size. I didn't open attachments but called one of the people on the phone and she said she hadn't sent me anything.
Now my question is what's happening here? Image Only one of the names on the e mails is in my address book.
I hope someone can explain this to me.

Could it be the new feared BugBear virus?

I got a similarly suspicious email this morning. I didn't open the attachment but now see that it can apparently cause damage just be reading the mail, which I did. Image

Grrrrrrr!

What's the 'cure'? I seem to recall that worms need to be dealt with differently than viruses. (?)
[This message was edited by Chris Bauer on 05 June 2003 at 09:26 PM.]

Anne Marie,

Just delete the emails...DO NOT open the attachments. Keep you AntiVirus updated...if it hasn't been updated in a while, please visit the website of the manufacturer like McAfee or Norton and download the latest DAT files.

Mark,

Do you know anything about the rumor that it can enter your system simply through opening the mail (without also opening attachments)?

Chris-- Yes, it CAN execute even without specifically opening attachments. But only under certain conditions. Below is the link to PC-cillin's page wher you can read all about it. --Everett

Thanks. From the link, it doesn't sound like I'm a likely victim. On the other hand, it was an AWFULLY suspiscious email in a variety of ways so I hope I haven't 'gotten bit' in some other way...

These days having a good firewall and virus program should be just as fundamental as having a mouse and keyboard for you computer.

Personally I use ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and Norton anti virus, so I should feel pretty safe but I'm STILL very careful with suspicious looking emails..

Steinar,

I have both a firewall and virus protection as well so I suppose I oughta relax more. Somehow, though, I'm always concerned that some clever soul will find away to ruin my machine in spite of the protection.

This .exe gets rid of it......
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

I've used it and it does things that "Housecall" and "Norton's" can't do ,,, that's delete a file that's running in the background within windows.
Took me 20 mins. to sort everything out.

I've owned a computer and been online before there was any such thing as a virus and have never been infected. What has worked for me:

1. Use the industry standard antivirus application (I use Norton; there are others equally effective -- update virus sigs regularly)
2. DON'T USE OUTLOOK OR OUTLOOK EXPRESS (there are other EMail clients -- try Eudora or the Netscape or Mozilla client apps). If you MUST use Outlook, be SURE to disable automatic opening of attachments.
3. If you have a direct / cable modem connection to the internet, install a hardware or software firewall (go to ZoneAlarm's website for more info)

There's very little risk to the integrity of your system if you catch the little buggers before they hit your hard drive. Norton AntiVirus does that admirably. BUT REMEMBER TO AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE YOUR VIRUS SIGNATURES REGULARLY -- preferably automatically. The annual subscription to Symantec or McAfee is worth it's weight in anguish.

Just a word to the wise.

I have a pretty high tech PC for 3D animation and video stuff, but I NEVER, EVER go on line with it. I use a Mac and dump unknown attachments anyway. Knock wood I won't get stung.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 16 June 2003 at 03:18 PM.]

Wrong! The preview pane does open the mail. It's the most insecure feature of Outlook Express. If it were disabled by default, most of the email viruses out there would fizzle away.

If you must use Outlook Express, turn off the Preview Pane and do a quick run through the titles in your inbox before you open any mail. Delete all of the items that look like spam, have an attachment or otherwise look suspicious. Then open your emails, one at a time.
