spam

Post by Joe Delaronde »

This is getting so rediculous.
I open my email and get 35 spams. I block every one and they still keep coming hot and heavy. I quit going on internet sites because it simply adds more.
It has taken the pleasure out of email. I enjoy and have a lot of email friends. I just feel like getting off and shutting
eveything down.

Yesterday alone, I received 176 spam emails

HOW CAN I GET RID OF IT?????????
Help...........

Hi Joe,
Do you use Ad-Aware? http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
It's a start (and free).

I'm seriously afraid that spam will cripple the Internet.

I think that there should be a world-wide 1-cent tax on every email sent. The penny could go to the country where the mail server resides. It could be tacked on to each user's Internet bill.

I wouldn't mind spending a penny for every email I send, if it meant that junk mail spam would be eliminated. I think that this would be the most popular tax in history.

I get 150 to 200 a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

I think it has a lot to do with how many times you've posted to a message board. Web spiders search out e-mail addresses. They frequent message boards to get addresses. The addresses are also sold to other sites and services. If you frequent any boards, hide your address if possible. They might even get addresses from here. I think cookies can also give away your mail address. There's so many ways for them to get your addresses...

Bottom line, it's un-avoidable. If you're on-line, eventually they will find your address.

Never reply to them to take them off of their list. It just tells them that the address is active. They take it off the list from which they sent you the mail, then sell it or add it to a few dozen, (or hundred,) others to make up for it.

A tax like b0b mentioned would probably be the way to go. It wouldn't end spam, but it would be from more reputable people... (maybe...)

My suggestion is to get used to using the delete button or change your mail address frequently, (which is damned inconvenient..)

My best,
Ernie

Our local server ( Samlink --which is a part of the area electrical supply-- owned by Sam Houston Electric Co.) has activated a new program for it's customers ( free service) called emScan . It is a product of Postini --I assume this is a company and it is working both to catch spam and also any viruses that come into our server. They never get to our inbox any more . The server Quarantines all of this stuff at the server in a "Message Center" that you can check into and either delete the ones you don't want or accept the ones you do want and authorize them to be sent on to your inbox . You can also block senders that you know send spam and authorize senders you want messages from to bypass the program and go straight into your inbox .

Thought maybe those of you that are having so much trouble with spam , might bring this type service to your server's attention . Maybe they can try it . It sure has stopped all this mess we have gotten in the past. I hope it will continue to in the future .

I assume there are other programs just as good available . They are sure worth a try .

I recommend 'EmailExpress'. Its a free download and works a treat - it just bins the spam without you needing to do a thing. You can also tell it which subjects/senders to let through (e.g I let through anything with the words 'steel' 'forum' 'tab' etc in the subject line)

b0b and Ernie. Once the government its hands into our back pocket there is no return. Look what has happened to postage rates. Why can't our senators pass a law against it. Here in KY we have enacted a no call on the phone which you can sign up for and eliminate the tele marketer calls. It works great, and if they call you there is a stiff fine. Charging for e mail is a very bad idea in my opinion. We pay enough in taxes now and I for one will fight any increase in our government adding more taxes.

I don't think a tax would work. This would probably cause spammers to locate in another country, out of the reach of the tax collector. There are all kinds of places that don't have treatys with the US.

I just delete all those that I can't identify the sender. I suppose that anyone running a business on line would have a major problem with the amount of spam that we have now.
[This message was edited by Bill Moore on 11 May 2003 at 05:56 PM.]

I recommend Mailwasher too. I've used it for two weeks now, and you can check email before you download it, and if you don't like something, you can either delete it or bounce it as if your address was dead.
My spam has fallen by about half since I started using it. I guess I've fallen off a few lists now.
Cheers

I run a medium sized network at my day job. This includes our mail server. I am blocking 25,000 emails a week (on average). With me blocking this many, I still have our CEO and others getting roughly 10-20 a day! I am with b0b. I think spam is going to cripple the internet.

It has gotten really crazy recently. I remember right before Christmas, the spam count was around 40,000 per week! We have tried all sorts of products, but none of them really work well. Right now I write all of my own rules and run them at server side.

Take this example...I want to block all emails with profanity in them...well what if someone’s name is this... Sammy Shitzer. The spam rule will now BLOCK that email because there is profanity in it. What if Sammy Shitzer was trying to email my CEO regarding some account or new business! I might as well look for a new job!

See where the struggle is...This problem really stinks and it is only getting worse everyday!

Mark

I agree with you anti-taxers. The last thing the internet needs is the ever-reaching hand of the tax man. I also doubt that spam will cripple the internet. Telemarketers haven't crippled the telephone- and you actually have to TALK to them to get rid of them; spam is gone with the click of a button. Billboards haven't crippled highways- they're just ugly. Lord knows, ads haven't crippled TV or radio. All of these things can be, and have been dealt with. Services, such as Yahoo, are constantly working to keep pace with the newest ways of spamming- they're not perfect, but it's a work-in-progress. Also, I think this was mentioned above, but don't forget about filters. Every email program has them- you just need to be clever about using them. For instance, you can create a filter that puts everything with the phrase "long distance" in a junk folder. But since you're worried about missing emails from Aunt Betty, you can create one that puts all emails from her in your inbox. You could also make it so that all emails with the word "steel" in any part of them are sent to a specific folder.

DON'T LET THE INTERNET BECOME REGULATED. Have faith in the ingenutiy of those who need your business, and will find a way to keep it if it's threatened. Yahoo may be a free service, but it' no charity.

(That was at least my two and a half cents worth- now, how the he** do you guys use these finger-picks?...)

Tony,
Where would you find the filters in Outlook Express? I clicked on all the menu's and couldn't find anything on filters.
Unless THEY call it something else.

Guess I must be living right. I rarely if ever get spam at my regular email address, but my Yahoo account that I haven't used for over a year gets three or four spams per day. Image

I need to enlarge my breasts....and most of all, my (you know what) is too small.....

I don't know where to go or what to do!
