making mp3 files from a cd ???
Jeff Lampert offered to help me work out the steel intro to an old song.
Problem is he needs me to send him an mp3 file of the intro.
What software do I need and how does one go about getting 30 secs of a cd into an mp3 file?
Thanks Michael

I use Cakewalk Pyro. Works great, but it's not free. It's worth paying for, though. It's a really nice, easy-to-use program for dealing with sound files and CDs.

Michael:
What is the name of the song? I may have it and if so, will do up an mp3 and email it to Jeff.

dbPower Amp has a great free utility for ripping mp3s. I use it all the time. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

In addition to Mike's suggestion of dbpoweramp, (which is what I use) there is CDex http://www.cdex.n3.net/ which is less versatile, but maybe easier to jump right in to.

You are going to need a program that will let you cut the wave file to include the part you want to send. CD ripping is not going to be enough unless you want to send the whole song. Programs like Goldwave, Sound Forge, any music editing program will let you cut just the part of the file you want to save. Most of these programs will save your edited wave file to mp3. Hope this helps. Winston May

Total Recorder from www.highcriteria.com does exactly what Michael wants - and much more - for $12. Free version upgrades. Easy to use, small program, records from any source - including the soundcard's output (you can record whatever you can hear). Gives you many sampling rates and lets you 'audition' what you've recorded prior to commitiing to hard disk. Good product. --Everett

I used to use Music Match Jukebox, but their never-ending promotional emails really turned me off. I hate that crap.
