Norton update

My Norton antivirus 2001 is going to expire in about a month.
I get these pop-ups asking if I want to update Now.
what is the best way to update ?
Do I just go buy another somewhere and uninstall the old one and install the new ?
Reason for asking is, I once had McAfee and when it expired I tried the electronic(by computer) update, and wound up in a heap of trouble.
I couldn't get rid of the old McAfee ,so therefore I couldn't install the new one , they would fight.
My computer wound up in the shop for a complete clean-up, and then I installed the Norton 2001 I bought from Wal Mart.
Been trouble free, works better than a mouse trap

If you plan to upgrade to a newer version of Norton, do that now and you'll get a free year of antivirus updates. If you want to stay with 2001 (which works fine) answer yes the next time it asks if you want to update your subscription. I think it's around $9.95 for a year and you can pay with your credit card through the web site you'll be taken to.

I did that and later when I bought the newer version, just waited until my paid year was about up before I installed it.

Of course if you buy a new version every year you never have to pay for the subscription.

Kenny;
I believe that it just wants you to update the virus protection/virus profiles. After a short time, it pops up reminding you to do an update.
Open the program and look to see if there is an update button somewhere.

Thanks Jim, i think i'll take your advice on keeping the 2001 if there aren't any advantages to the newer version.
like I said , no problems so far with it.

Ernie,are you talking about the virus definition, it has a "live update" button,

or the "update service for virus protection" button ,and it tell you how many day's are remaining on it.

I personally like the Norton 2002 version. It has the capability to "sense" when you are connected to the internet and then it will automatically "update" your antivirus definitions for you. This way you don't have to open the application and hit the "live update" button. It is a nice feature and I am sure you could find a version of 2002 real cheap today. They have the 2003 version already out and they are probably looking to blow out the old 2002 versions. Check BestBuy and other stores like that. I also like McAfee ver. 6 or higher. It has the same "automatic" features.

NAV 2003 has even more automatic features than 2002 -- handles EMail scanning better and other goodies. Upgrade from 2000 with 1 yr of virus sig updates was less than $30.

My two cents worth is to definitely stay with Norton. When it was time to renew Norton, I decided to save a few bucks and go with McAfee. Big mistake...it was nothing but a headache. I have since gone back to Norton. Not to slander McAfee, but their software caused a bunch of system problems for me. Hope this helps....

I agree with Jeff. I couldn't let the McAffee program freely run, as it would lock things up on occasion. When I opened the program to do a scan it would blue screen me three or four times before it would open. The Norton I can leave on with no problems.

I got the Norton 2003 Pro Anti-Virus at Circuit City a few weeks ago. It was around $65 bucks to start with, but after two $30 mail-in rebates, it came up to $4.99. I don't think the rebate promo is still on, but if you have a Circuit City near you it may be worth a call to see. Otherwise, I think the on-line renewal is cheaper than buying the software from a retailer. Wal Mart would probably have the best retail price, but I haven't checked there since I already have mine.
