Re-using an old hard drive

I'm considering removing the hard drive out of my old (6 years) system and using it in my new system as secondary storage. The drive is closer to 3 years old and is a 10 GB.

My new system says it uses "cable sense" to determine which disk is master/slave. I'll have to contact Dell to determine how to jumper the old drive for "cable sense".

Anything else to beware of in doing this?

Ron,

If you look at the sticker on the Hard Drive itself, it should tell you what jumpers you need to have on in order for the old drive to be "Cable Detect". Give that a try and let me know. There should be a illustration on the sticker of the HD.

Yeah, those clips are small and I always have a problem holding onto them. The best way I have found to grab them is with a pair of tweezers. This way you can get them off of the pins with out using your fingernail and then shooting it across the room.

Ron -

Another option is to go to the web site of the drive maker - find their search button and type in the drive model number. You will get the tech specs and diagrams of where the jumpers go.

You do not have to use the cable sense setting if you don't want to, or if your drive does not support it - just set it as a slave (that may mean you also have to set the other as a master).

You can use the cable select position on the hard drive only if you use a "cable select" ribbon cable which is different that a normal IDE cable.
