Computer question
I know this is probably a dumb question to some of you, but I am pretty illiterate when it comes to computer capabilities, so here goes. I will be buying a new computer system in the next couple of weeks and would like to be able to use it some for burning CDs and maybe run sound from the computer into a PA system and maybe use BIAB. I'm pretty sure I want something with a Pentium 4 processor, maybe 80GB hard drive, 512MB Ram, etc. Any tips on what sound card I need? How about speaker system? If I use BIAB a lot, how does that affect my needs? Would 80 GB be enough? I don't plan to download any games or other programs that require extensive amounts of space.
I know it's hard to give advice without knowing my needs in detail, but if any of you who incorporate your computer with your music activities have tips on gizmos I can't live without, please pass them on and I thank you in advance.

Your computer will be fine with the specs that you have listed. I like using the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum EX sound card as it comes with a I/O box that sits on top of the computer for easy access in and out including SPDIF (Sony-Phillips Digital Interface) for interfacing with any digital equipment that you may have now or get in the future (ie.- a digital recorder,
etc.). I also have picked up a set of Bose computer speakers but it's not necessary to take it that far. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions- glad to help anytime~~ Jim

About a year ago I also started a quest for a new computer designed specifically for music. My research indicated that a Gateway 500X contained all of the currently available technology for working with digital music.
When it was delivered I just took it out of the box and plugged it in......and it has surpassed all my expectations!
[This message was edited by Gene Jones on 26 November 2002 at 01:46 PM.]
