Shut Down Problem

I've been having a sporadic problem of the shutdown option not appearing when I click on the "Start" button in Windows 98. It doesn't happen all the time though. I realize I can just ctr-alt-del and select shutdown but this is irritating. Anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it.

I've never had the problem you describe, but you might try doing a Windows Update.

This is normal for Microsoft Windows. To restart, use the power switch on the computer. Mac is no better; I just left a Pro Tools session where the only way to restart was to use a paper clip inside the G4.

IMHO upgrade your OS.

I only have a couple of machines at work running Windows 98 and I can't stand them! I have more shutdown problems that it isn't funny. If it were me, I would take Windows 2000 or XP.

But, yes you should definitely do a Windows Update. You can do that by going to the Microsoft website or if you run Internet Explorer you can go to the TOOLS menu and then scroll down to Windows Update.

What is puzzling, is that it just started about a month ago and I've had 98 since it came out on here. I think I might go ahead and upgrade. I want to put a larger hard drive in anyway, so this might be a good time to "start over".

Here are my recommendations for upgrading. If you are going up to Windows 2000 or XP, minimum RAM that I would recommed is 256 MB. If you only have 128 you will see it stall on some tasks. The price of RAM is so cheap now, that it really makes sense to go ahead and spend the extra $25 and it will leave you with not as many headaches.

In the meantime if you don't upgrade right away, you might want to run "system file checker" in the System Tools to see if you've got any missing or corrupt files. And perhaps a scanreg /restore as well. If you're not familiar with that, let me know and I'll be glad to help.

I agree with Mark on the XP. I've ran 'em all, Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, and Millenium and the new XP is light years ahead...IMHO. The stability of the NTSF file system alone is worth upgrading for!

There is a MicroSoft "Patch" for this shut-down problem. If you cannot find it on their web-site, send me an e-mail and I will sent it to you.

This problem has been around for a long time and generally shows up after a installation of a new software package. I think there is also a "Service Pak" that needs to be run after the installation of "Windows 98".

I've noticed that "Windows 98, Second edition" dosen't seem to have this problem quite as bad as the original package.

Sounds like you might have a virus. The "Melissa" virus has been known to cause that problem. Microsoft has a lengthy procedure on their website to eliminate it, completely. But, since you already have it, I would install the Windows 98. If you're like most people, and have some old programs that you like...beware! Most of your old programs will probably not run on Windows XP!

But they don't tell you this in their literature.
