Help!!!!!!

Post by Eddie Harper »

I Just found out I have a Klez virus on my computer and didn't know it until it knocked my CD writer out.My subscription for Norton's had run out so I went and bought NVA 2002 but it will not load because of the virus. On Symantec web page is a tool to download to get rid of the virus but when i downloaded to the desktop and started XP in safe mode no file was there to use. Symantec Tech support is $39.95 for a plan or 69.95 for a plan with assistance or 4.95 a minute otherwise.does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to rid myself of this mess? Could I just format my hard drive and would that do away with it? What if I click on the FixFlez file with out being in safe mode? any help appreciated. Eddie

If the directions say to run FixFlez in safe mode, that is what you should do. You couldn't see it on your desktop in safe mode because apparently safe mode doesn't give you access to all the desktop icons.

Either look at your desktop in Windows Explorer and run it from there or copy the file to a folder on your PC so you can see and run it in safe mode.

Eddie,

How do you know you have a virus? Have you gotten a confirmation on this virus?

OK, if you have the Klez, virus you will notice that your PC is running EXTREMELY slow. Go ahead and follow the instructions to turn off the "system restore" utility if you are running Windows ME or XP. Then start in Safe Mode and run the FixKlez util. It is ok if you don't have the Klez virus and run it, it will not hurt your system.

yes, reformatting your PC will get rid of it, but reformatting in Windows XP is a lot more difficult than it was before in 98 and ME. XP does not run in a DOS environment and format does not work the same way.

Try the fixklez util and let me know.

Mark

Mark my machine was running erratic but just didn't give it a thought until I called Dell Tech support about the CD Burner.I went to Symenatec web site and did a virus scan and showed I had over 100 infected files.I really wasn't wanting to format as I know XP is a lot different.
Jim I put the FixFlez in a different folder and launched in safe mode but the folder still didn't contain the FixFlez tool. Thanks for your Help. Eddie

Well I finally got rid of the Klez virus and got all my NVA loaded and working. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I was finally able to view the FixKlez tool when I put it in a new folder on the desktop.Went to safe mode and opened Windows Explorer and did a search for the folder. It took me about 4 times to get the file to actually run as it would prompt me to launch in safe mode which I already was in but finally started and disinfected my system. I was then able to load my NVA software and did a complete scan and still found 2 infected files. So everything is Ok now and again Thanks for all your help. Now maybe I can concentrate on Steel Guitar. Eddie
