Screen display

Post by Joe Delaronde »

My screen display suddenly jumped to big icons. When I reset them to 800x600, press apply, re-boot, they still come back big Help..Joe

i had that problem with one of my client's IBM Aptiva. I don't remember exactly what I did as it drove me batty trying to get it straightend out. I think reinstalling the video did the trick, but I can't swear to it.

IBM Aptivas are a nightmare to troubleshoot compared to many other PC's.

Joe:
Go to start, then settings and then Active Desktop. Click on Customize My Desktop then click on the effects tab. Make sure the button "Use large icons" is not checked.

I done this, and whenever I change the setting to 800&600, then click apply, the computer re-boots with big icons and low res....The plug & play detected my video card OK...Can't see pics or read some smaller print. Frustration. I don't have a gun, but I do have an 18lb sledghammer....Joe

Joe....

It seems like your not useing the correct video drivers, I have that problem every time I reload my machine. (yea, I have to do that on a regurlar basis due to downloads that want to grab control of the computer or install themselfs without permission.)

The computer will automatically revert back to the lower resolution mode when it cain't find correct drivers. I understand the Windows generic screen drivers will work as long as you don't turn off the machine, but if you have the CD or floppy that came with your video card, reinstall the drivers from there.

This is a long shot here, but if your video card dosen't have enought memory on-board, it will not do the 1024x768 and higher modes. Also true-color mode won't work either. I think that 8 meg video ram is the minimum for this.

if some of the other post dosen't fix your machine, maby this will get you started in the right direction.

I'm in Windows ME, but I think this is true for all versions of Windows.

Right click on the desktop. Select "Properties". Select the "Effects" tab. There's a checkbox that says "Use Large Icons". Uncheck it. Click OK.
