Mike Brown, Please Help if you can!!!

Post by Davie Holland »

Hiya Mike,
My problem is that I have a Pro-Fex 1 (the one without the card slot). I`ve had it for a number of years and its been great. When I bought it, it had a slight distortion/white noise if a note was played softly and as a louder note tailed off.
This seemed to come and go over the years and I thought that it was normal. However, recently it got worse so I sent it to Peavey UK in Corby, England.
They`ve had it for over two months now and the latest info I have from them is that they have ordered a couple of chips from Peavey USA and are waiting on them being delivered (they said that Peavey USA might send them over the water which could take weeks!!!!) . Now they also said that one of the chips they reckon might be causing the problem is OBSOLETE! They mentioned something about a DSP chip and another one which they didnt name.
My question is this! If the chip which they get doesnt do the trick, is my profex dead? They`ve already replaced the battery for me (I dont think they know about the batteryless mod in the UK) and I had the "BiG CHIP with the software version marked on it" changed from ver 1.3 to 1.4! I have tried the original 1.3 chip back in but to no avail!

Sorry for the long post, but I`m at my wits end trying to salvage it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hiya Mike, Thanks for taking the time to respond so quickly. The person I was originally dealing with was called Carl in customer services, but the last two or three times I`ve phoned, he put me straight thru to one of the technical engineers, and it always seemed to be the same person who answered the call. I didnt get his name. I can email you the returns number if that helps?
Thanks again.

You probably spoke with Brian at Peavey UK as he has contacted me about this. The work order number helped, but I feel sure that Brian is quite capable of repairing the unit. However, I will be on "stand by" should he need my help.

I had a telephone call today from Tim at Peavey UK. He acknowledged your email. Apart from that, he only repeated what has been already said, ie that he would try to get the parts over by airmail rather than on a container to speed up the process. (I`d have hoped that they would have insisted on the parts via airmail considering I sent the unit to them over two months ago!) He said he would email you too.
He also mentioned that it was a chip on the input or output of the profex that was at fault and not the software version chip.
I`ll let you know when I get any more info.

Still Waiting!! Over 3 months now!!!

I bought a second hand profex from ebay today and guess what? This one was worse!! I replaced the battery but to no avail. Its not any of my other equipment as I took it to a friends house and tried it with their guitar/leads/amp.

Surely a company the size of Peavey would have a clue as to what is going wrong?

Davie, do you want to try my profex to see if it works any better.Had the mods done at Dallas, works fine but still get studio engineers complaining about noise from it(most say they always have problems with Peavey gear being noisey), although I find it great for live work. Regards Malcolm

Thanks Malc, thats very kind of you. I actually went out the other day and bought a pod xt as I was fed up waiting.
It sounds very quiet and I can get the tones I need from it with no problems.

(It will come in handy in October as I`m touring with Heather Myles again, and I need to fly to Norway and Holland)

I just have to wait and see what happens with my own profex, and when the problem is solved (hopefully), I can get the other one done as well.

I purchased an Adverb a few years ago from a well known dealer in town and whilst it sounded ok I could not get it to save my patches.
I returned it to the dealer who, in turn sent it to Peavey U.K. for investigation/repair and when it came back it was exactly the same as before. The unit was sent back and forward to Peavey another two times and each time it came back with the same fault.
I recieved a full refund from the dealer.
I have nothing but praise for Peavey equipment having had sevaral amps and such over the years, but I would probably use a local repair man before sending anything to Peavey U.K.
Best regards
Billy

Thanks Mike. I`m so glad we have someone like you at Peavey who is sympathetic to us steelers!!! If you dont mind me asking, what part was it that peavey uk asked for?
Billy, I agree totally. I think Peavey products are the dogs bo**ocks! Thats why I am trying sooo hard to salvage (both) my profex`s. Hopefully, if this part solves the problem, It might be easier in future to get it.
