JBL speaker?

Post by Michael Hartz »

I have a 15",4 ohm made for Peavey,JBL speaker that came out of one of my old Session 400's. It has a black frame, silver plate on back with vent holes, and an aluminum cone. It's been reconed once and is now blown again. I would like to get it reconed again to go with the other one I have. What JBL model is this and who can recone this for me? Someone awhile back told me that JBL no longer makes a 15", 4 ohm spaeker and finding a recone kit would be difficult. Is this true. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Michael, I think you are describing a JBL K130. I would recommend sending it to Woody Woodell at Benchcraft Electronics in Nashville, Tenn. I believe a D130 cone and voice coil will work and I know for sure that Woody knows what to put in it. Woody is busy and it will take a while but it will be perfect when you get it back and the price is around $110.00 plus shipping both ways. Let us know if you need contact info for Woody. A lot of guys here use his services.

This is the same speaker as the JBL K130-4. The only difference is the JBL logo has been replaced in favor of the Peavey. I believe many on the forum recommend Woody Woodell (I hope that's right,)as a good person to do this for you. I believe he's in Tennesee, but am not sure where. I'm sure someone on the forum has his location and will be glad to help.

Woody has done several speakers for me, including JBL's, and they are great. If Woody's work is good enough for the Nashville Cats, it's sure good enough for me! woody.33@comcast.net
[This message was edited by James Morehead on 23 February 2006 at 10:56 PM.]

No, JBL no longer makes the exact replacement, but there are generic reconing kits available that are still pretty good. This speaker was never particularly noted for tone (like the D-130 was), so I think you'll be quite happy with a generic replacement.

Webber, makes a perfect clone of the D 130 cone kit in 4/8/16, ohms, and you have a choice of the early paper to the edge cone or cloth, there kits, are the real deal, and at after market prices, dont go waldham, unless you want a woofer.

My old Session 400 has the original speaker in it . It is a JBL-D-130F. ? Was this earlier than the JBL made for Peavey ?

The D130F was originally developed for use in Fender guitar amps, this was some time before Peavey was putting them into their amps. Essentially JBL took their superb D130 HiFi woofer and opened up the gap a bit to improve cooling at high power levels. The K130 is virtually identical.
