Goodrich 120 question

Post by Adam Przybyla »

I have a Goodrich 120 volume pedal that I purchased brand new about two months ago, and it seems to have lost a lot of its smoothness. I can definitely feel some friction as I step down on it, and it's making my volume swells sound really jerky. I've opened it up and tried monkeying around with the string, but this doesn't seem to help all that much. Are there any other adjustments that anyone can think of? Since it's only a couple of months old, I wouldn't think that the pot needs to be replaced already. Also, what is the purpose of the spring that's attached near the axle of the pedal?

Adam, you might try a drop of thin lube on the pot shaft bearing and the axle bearing. Make sure that the string is wound properly. There is a diagram on scottys website www.scottysmusic.com .
The pot can cause this problem if it has internal damage.
I would think that the spring is used to keep some tension on the pedal so it doesn't fall when your foot is removed.

I have seen this caused by the pully on the pot shaft being to tight against the face of the pot! It will eventually bind the pot up completely. Move it a bit away from the pot face and work the pedal thru its travel to loosen the pot. You may have to lightly tap on the end of the pot shaft to release the bind. Seen it twice on Goodrich pedals. Makes it stiff as a dog!

And, the pot could be bad. The new pots have known to fail prematurely. A friend bought a new Goodrich pedal and the pot was bad when he got it. He fortunately had a "good" pot and replaced the orignal and no more problems.
