Difference between BW 1501 & 1502?

Post by Ken Byng »

My Black Widow 1502 speaker in my NV400 has just blown after 25 years of stirling service. A friend of mine had a brand new boxed BW 1501 that he has kindly sold to me for a very small fee. Is there any difference between the 2 speakers? I must admit that I can't hear any difference so perhaps the only difference is cosmetic.

I always thought that the 1502 might be a little warmer sounding by cutting the highs and mids a little - But, I don't think there is much difference.

The 1501 was primarily a guitar speaker, using a curved cone and aluminum dome, like the old JBL's. The 1502 was designed as a bass speaker, and has a straight Kevlar-composite cone. It will handle more power, but it's considerably less efficient. The 1502 is a little smoother and "deader", not quite as lively and peaky as the 1501.

The 1501-BW is primarily voiced for Guitar with a paper cone.
The 1502-BW is voiced for Bass Guitar with a Kevlar impregnated cone. Both are very good speakers and many players use the 1502-BW for Guitar as well.
I happen to like the 1501-BW for Steel.

When I bought my pre-owned Evans, it had a 1502 already in it. It has plenty of highs for me. I wish I had a 1501 handy just so I could try it out. i certainly wouldn't be afraid of a 1501 by any means, after all the amps do come with control knobs, or some players use effect unit of some sort and can adjust their tone. If you have a 1501 put'r in there and try it out. that way you will know for yourself with your own ears.
