What Year Twin with master volume?

Post by thurlon hopper »

I bought a S.F Twin that doesn't have the Master volume control. Just wondered what year did Fender begin putting the Master volume control on? Also would a cover for a '65 Twin fit my amp? Thanks for any info.

The cover will fit and I think about '72 or '73 was the first master volume. Wish I still had mine.

Your Amp is a 1972 or earlier. The Cover from a 1965 Twin should fit.

The Silver Face master volume Twin was made from '72 to '83. 6-stringers don't like them much, and a couple of companies make a mod to remove the master volume circuit.

The cabinet is the exact same size as the '65 reissue Twin at 20 X 26 X 10 1/2 inches.

When I had a SF Master Vol Twin Reverb...I just ran the MV wide open.

I have a '65 BF Twin now and wouldn't trade it for the world.

For pedal steel, my silver face master volume Pro, Dual and Super Twin sound great. I usually run them with the channel volume and master volume set the same, to get equal amounts of tone from the preamp tubes and power tubes. If you run the master volume wide open all the time, is that really any different tone than you would get with a silver face non-master volume amp? I have a feeling the whole master volume prejudice is just a way to identify earlier silver face amps, and comes from the blind belief than anything earlier must be better, which is not necessarily true for steel. If the master volume circuit is run wide open, does it really color the tone, and in a bad way?
[This message was edited by David Doggett on 24 October 2005 at 06:50 AM.]

I have converted several master volume amps to non-master. I could not hear a bit of difference with the volume wide open and after the change. Primary reason for doing it was also to convert the electronics to Blackface and replace the control plate with a Fender Blackface plate!

I always left the reverb at Silverface specs, as it sounds better to most. The late 70's reverb was a bit different and can be inproved dramatically by converting back to early 70's Silverface reverb circuit!
