I think you need a decent steel, a good steel amp, and a decent steel guitar volume pedal. All the above...and some good players in your area that you can visit with, ask questions, etc. The Portland area is fortunate to have a number of great players, many of whom have been a great help to me: Doug Jones, Larry Behm, Harley James, Dave Grafe, and Eric West come to mind. Tabs, books and videos are fine, but there is nothing like sitting at the feet of a master, even for a short time. I'll also add that these are some of the most helpful players I have ever met. Just my two cents.
