New Steel Guitar Amps-The Best Prices

Post by Paul Warnik »

After having the realization that I needed to upgrade my amplification to more recent models available-I decided to sell off a number of old amps that were stored away gathering dust and explore some newer options in steel guitar amps-In the last four months I have purchased three new amps-those being the Fender Steel King, Fender '65 Twin Custom 15", and the Peavey Nashville 112-I shopped around and found that NOBODY beats CORSON MUSIC for the lowest price-Dyke Corson and Jerry "Muttonhead" Erickson are steel players and they take care of other steel players-I bought all three of my newest amps from Corson Music and they are great to deal with not to mention that I have saved HUNDREDS of $$$ by buying these amps from them (in comparison to what other dealers advertised prices on these items) If you are looking for a new amp for steel guitar I most highly recommend http://www.corsonmusic.com

I add a second to what Paul said about Corson Music. Great prices and great people to do business with.

Paul, I'd be interested to hear your opinion on all of these amps. Currently looking for a PSG amp myself.

Which do you find yourself playing most often?

Gibson-I talked about my first experience with the Steel King here before-I heard an incredible sound while passing Scotty's room at the St.Louis convention-when I looked in to see-It was Jay Dee Maness playing through one! The King has a tone that I love with my Millenium or my old vintage P/P Emmons-Now the '65 Twin Custom 15" was not bought for a modern pedal steel sound (although I know one Nashville Pro who is touring with one) I needed an amp for the older style guitars such as my Bigsbys and Wright Custom-These old horns have pickups with big magnets and coils with larger wire wound to very low ohmage-They have to be played through a tube amp to get that real vintage sound-thats where it comes in-The bassey E13TH neck on the Bigsby just honks through this amp-It has been noted that some folks have had problems with early models of this amp that came equipped with the foreign made tubes-Mine has American made tubes and no problems-Another gripe surfaced that this model is not true to genuine '65 blackface twin specs because of the addition of some other brain module-Well I just had a guitarist friend here who is a vintage Fender amp nut and repairman play throught it-His comment was that the amp has all of the "Sparkle" that he would expect from the original Image As for the Peavey Nashville 112-Today is my first day to have and enjoy it-Look at the other forum threads and good things being said about it-I think I will be able to confidently echo all those accolades in days to come-I hope that answers all Image

Dyke saw my WTB post for a FSK and offered me a great price with cover, casters and FedEx shipping to TX (no tax). It arrived yesterday. Thanks Dyke for a good deal.

Ahhhhh....that new amp smell.....

I buy Peavey from a local music store, "Bondz Music" in Wildwood, Fl.

Johnny Bondz (Bondzinski), the owner, is a super steeler and will "take care" of the local steel guitar community.

Johnny plays an old SD-10 Sho-Bud, similar to the LDG models except this one was custom built for him before the LDG models. Johnny, at the time he got the steel, was the Gretsch/Sho-Bud salesman for Florida.

With all due respect, Paul- I think that you woulda liked what you heard coming out of the room with JayDee playing- even if he was playing out of a $39. Crate Amp Image.

I went to their web site and looked around a while, but I never found any prices or ordering info. My dialup is so slow is probably the reason.

Jim P-yes one does have to consider the source-I always said that I could listen to Lloyd Green strum a rubber band stretched across two nails in a board with his big toe and it would still be greater than anything I could do Image

The list price is $999.99.

The Steel King on ebay is (or at least better be) used, albeight, barely. Note the wording in the listing.

At this time Fender has very few dealers authorized to sell on the internet and has a strict MAP policy on top of that.
[This message was edited by John Fabian on 06 May 2005 at 12:16 PM.]
