OK, so just after I posted in another thread that I was totally happy with my tone, I'm thinking about changing up. Sue me!! Both my Evans (LV500 and HV500)have E series JBL's in them and they're really heavy. I've been playing with the idea of swapping them out for some 1501 BW's. Anyone else done this? How do ya like em?
David, I play an Evans E-200 large cabinet loaded with with a 1502 BW. Great tone! The lows are clean without losing the highs. the highs are clean. I have no problem with it. I play a LeGrande II with TrueTone 18.5 pickups. I am sure a 1501 would work just fine also, maybe just a little thinner sound but that is what knobs are for. BW speakers are reasonable in price so if you have or want to change speakers, it won't break the bank. Not to mention, if you blow a speaker you can just change out the basket, not the whole speaker, cheaper yet. I beleive Herb Steiner uses an Evans with a 1502. I think you will happy with either speaker
Yes, I use a 1502-4 in my 1995 Evans SE-200, upon the recommendation of Ed Buffington. I'm fixing to put a 1501-4 in my Webb 614-GP as well, since I think I blew the E-130-4 that's in there now.
I bought a new Evans SE-200 in July of 2003. It came with the Eminence Deltalite speaker, which is 8 ohms. I bought it because of the weight (42 lbs) but with the 8 ohm speaker in it, the max power output can only be 128 watts. In order to get the full rated 200 watts it needs a 4 ohm load. I don't play loud but I was still turning both the input and output gain controls to max. I had considered putting in a 1501-4 BW speaker but decided against it as the reason I bought the amp was because of the weight and adding a BW speaker would have negated any weight advantage. So I sold it (Feb 2004) and bought a Nashville 1000 (which I'm happy with) which is probably about the same weight as an SE-200 with a BW speaker in it.
BTW, the forumla for power out is E Sq'd divided by R. In the case of the SE-299, it's 32 V(DC) squared divided by 8 (ohms) or 4 (ohms). With the factory installed 8 ohm speaker it's 32X32=1024 divided by 8 - 128 watts. For a 4 ohm speaker 1024 divided by 4 equals 256 (actually more than the rated output but I was given the 32 volts measurement by Ed Buffington).
FWIW: I ordered my Evans FET-500 from Darrell with no speaker. I put a 1501-4DT in it and have been using it since 1988. I got another same vintage 500 with a JBL E-130-4 in 1999. It sounded way to raw and brittle compared to the BW. Sold the Jabe and got another Deep Throw. To my ear, the BW in an Evans with my Emmons has a really good mid-90s Hughey sort of sound.
I've talked to a bunch of folks about this, and whether you're a Peavey-holic, or can't STAND their equipment, the 1501-4 may well be the best all-around steel guitar speaker made. I like the EVM-15-L's, but I've got a new 1501 on standby, for when my back gives out!
I have a SE200 Evans and I replaced the stock speaker with a 1501-4 Black Widow and noticed an increase in weight, but a huge difference in sound quality, especially on the lower notes of my C6. I mounted the Evans speaker in another cabinet to be used with my non-pedal 56 Rickenbacker steel. I also have a 1984 FET500 Evans with an E130 4 ohm JBL and I wouldn't touch that baby, it has better quality and sound than the 1999 SE200 with or without the Black Widow.

Well, don't feel so bad, David, we all get shallow when it suits us!
[This message was edited by James Cann on 19 January 2005 at 12:11 PM.]

I have two Evans FET-500'S Low Voltage Large Enclosure models that have been retro-fitted with Black Widow 1501-4's Great sound lots of power-I have the Evans Dual pre-amp in my rack also-drives B.W. 1501's in Cush Case enclosures
Update! I picked up a 1501-4 SB Thursday and put it in my FET 500 small cab. So far, I love it! I'm sure it will only get better as it breaks in. Thanks for all the input!
