Bill, the Profex II is not "better" than the Tubefex, however it is different in that it actually had a tube in the front end. Both are programmable preamps with multi-effects, but the Tubefex algorhythms were different and some of the effects were different.

Both work fine for steel guitar when using the steel guitar presets or creating your own. If you have questions about either one, please let me know and I'll be glad to walk you through either unit. My number is 1-877-732-8391.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Peavey also made a "Transtube fex". Am I right Mike?

I have both the Tubefex and Transtubefex. These have the built in tuner, the Profex does not. This could be of interest to you.

The TubeFex has an AC power cord, the Profex has a wall wart transformer.
The TubeFex has a built in tuner, which is extremely handy.
The TubeFex has turn knobs to adjust tone and volume on the fly during live performances, the ProfEx must be programmed to make any changes.
The tubeFex has some more advanced patches than the ProFex, like the Rotosphere leslie sound, for example.
BUT, the TubeFex costs more!

Not to be a stinker, but the tone and volume controls work only "on the fly" when and if a "Tube" is in the effect chain. For all others the tone and volume require you first to enter the "global" mode to make a global adjustment for tone and volumes (again using the front panel knobs). Still not hard to do and a lot handier than the older Profex 2.
The tuner is all but unusable unless you have version 2.0, this corrected the unstable characteristics of the tuner.
All in all it is a great unit. If I had a choice, I would get a Transtubefex. No motorpot to go bad (only used for Tube volume adjustments), no tubes to ever replace and a handy headphone output.
Again, just my opinion! All three units are great. As Jeff Newman once told me about the Profex 2:
"It is a virtual studio in a box".
