Which Talkbox for "Talking Steel" Effect?

Post by Rainer Hackstaette »

What effect device do you use for the talking steel?

A local music store carries 3 different models:

Dunlop HT1 Talkbox at 209.00 Euros
Rocktron Banshee Amp-Talkbox at 165.00 Euros
Danelectro Free Speech at 88.90 Euros.

The Danelectro comes with integrated microphones that feed the effect back to your steel amp - no P.A. is needed. The other two pedals need an extra mike and work only with a P.A. system.

How do these units compare soundwise? Has anyone tried the Danelectro? Are there other talkboxes?

Thanks,
Rainer

I use a Digitech "Talker",that was manufactured by IVL Technologies,in the very late 90's. They are a "stomp-box" format,& sold for,approximately,$250 (U.S.) Unfortunately, they quit making them after,about,3 years so,if you ever found one,it would probably a used one,in a pawn shop,or music store. They, also, work w/o an extra mike. No "tube in the mouth" either.
I'm not familiar w/ any of the ones you mentioned.

I have a Heil Talk Box here that someone asked me to sell for him. Mint condition - it's never been used. I have no idea what it's worth. It's pretty heavy, though - I'd be hesitant to ship it to Europe.

Friend of mine works in a music store here and he didn't recommend getting the Dano, cheap yes, but the others work a lot better.

First, thanks to all who replied. Much obliged!

Smiley, do you use the Talker with or w/out a mike? Is the effect w/out mike usable at all?

Joey, thanks for the link and the heads-up re. eBay. I'll be watching it.

Bobby, I agree, the Heil would be much too heavy to ship overseas. Shipping costs, customs duty and taxes would make even a bargain more expensive than buying the item used over here. Anyway, thanks for the offer.

Carter, the Heil sold on eBay for between 50 and 150 U.S.$ during the last month or so.

Jussi, I thought as much. There has to be a reason for the vast difference in price.

I think the "Talking Steel" (or guitar, for that matter) is a cool effect, if used sparingly. The tube-in-mouth thing of most units has me worried a little, though. I fear that drooling on my instrument may lead the audience to think I'm a drummer. Image

Thanks again,
Rainer

Jody,
Just type
Digitech Talker
in the Search field at eBay.

There's 5 there now, but that changes as times goes on.
