Volume Pedal of Choice

Post by Eddie Thomas »

I've been using a couple of Franklin pedals for years and they have worked great, but I think its time to move on. I was wondering what is the volume pedal of choice today? Thank's guys!

The Franklins were wonderful, quality and beauty. The problem today with all pedals that use a "Potentiometer" is that the quality of these "Pots" are declining rapidly with the future looking bad for them even being produced at all, soon.
Most players that work steel for a living are now using "pot-less" pedals. Goodrich or Hilton. I feel that this is where the future is going, and fast.
The "pot-less" pedals have no strings to give trouble or adjust, no "pots" to wear out, they have adjustible taper and tone controls and are wonderfully priced so as to be a great value compared to the pot pedals, (if you figure in maintanence).

Not to detract from anything that worked in the past....but isn't technology wonderful?

Eddie,
I got my Hilton from Bobbe, sure glad I did. It's one more item to plug in, but worth the minimal hassle. Smooth operation, no change in tone at any volume, easily adjusted for point of zero volume, and no pot to ever replace. Consider it!

Just bought a Hilton last week from Jerry Roller who sells the Hilton volume pedals among other items. Great pedal...should have retired the 'pot' pedal before now!

..I use a Hilton...could have bought 2 or 3 of them with the money I spent messing aroung with pot pedals..

..great product, great service from Keith Hilton (not that it needs much), but he's also easily reachable to answer any questions..

Hilton, hands down
I'm sure the Goodrich 'potless' pedal is good too, but Keith got his out sooner so that's what I went with. The Hilton is one of those SG products I would recommend without reservation. I have two of them.

That Hilton pedal is really amazing. The feel is completely smooth. The guts are very high end in their design. You'll rarely see musical electronics use such high end components. It's truly an audiophile quality piece. Sometimes I really like to use my old Sho-Bud pedal because of it's smooth feel and action, and there are some setups where it's nice to hear the purity of just a pickup, (and maybe a Black Box), a volume pot, and an amp . The electronics of the Hilton serve not only as a perfectly smooth volume control circuit, but as a preamp/impedance matcher, it's about the best sounding piece on the market. It really does a great job. It's also very tweakable, the travel length/feel, theoff point, and even the tone.

I have the Goodrich LDR which is superb, has great tone across the whole volume spectrum and seems to have more grunt than my old 10k model.
Didn't that bloke Hilton used to have a hotel somewhere ?? (and a couple of loose daughters!!)

OK, OK, you guys have got my interest, time to replace the old "mechanical" pedal with a new fangled electronic one. Anybody have web pages, addresses, or phone numbers for Hilton or Goodrich or their distributors? How can I get me one of these in time for Santa to deliver it?

Thanks a bunch for any info & help.

I may be fairly close to Paris, and I have a Hilton. I've even stayed at The Hilton.

But I really wish I had NO SPAM about that girl.

Heck she don't even play steel! Image
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 15 December 2003 at 03:58 PM.]

The new issue of Pedal Steel.US mag should have my Hilton Pedal review. Can't beat 'em! Keith really cares about advancing the tech side of steel life.

Eddie Thomas: There's a review of the Goodrich LDR potless volume pedal in the www.pedalsteel.us (July/July issue - still for sale I believe)

Steve Allison: Goodrich's phone and address are listed on our Accessories page here:
SteelGuitar.com/resource/accessor.htm

And, as JBS mentioned, we do sell the Goodrich LDR here:

[*]OnLine Accessories Orders

[*]or, if you prefer, you may use our Printable Order Form[/list]

Many other Goodrich dealers sell the Goodrich LDR, as well.

Hope that helps Image
